The Ottawa Senators have reached a contract agreement with forward Xavier Bourgault, avoiding arbitration. The one-year, two-way deal is valued at the NHL league minimum of $850,000 for the 2026-27 season, with a salary of $265,000 if he plays in the American Hockey League.
Arbitration Avoided
Bourgault, 23, was one of 15 NHL players to file for arbitration and the only Senator to do so. The move was reportedly aimed at securing a raise in the AHL, where his base salary was $90,000 in 2025-26. The new contract more than doubles that figure.
The Montreal native was selected 22nd overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2021 NHL Draft. He was acquired by the Senators in a 2024 trade that sent Roby Jarventie and a fourth-round pick to Edmonton, with Jake Chiasson also coming to Ottawa.
AHL Success and NHL Debut
Bourgault is expected to start the 2026-27 season with the Belleville Senators, Ottawa's AHL affiliate, after setting career highs last season. He recorded 57 points (25 goals, 32 assists) in 70 games, playing on the top line with Arthur Kaliyev, who led the league in goals.
He made his NHL debut with the Senators in December 2025, logging three shots in 10 shifts against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite that brief appearance, cracking the NHL roster out of training camp is considered unlikely barring injuries.
Contract Details and Future Outlook
The Senators announced the signing on July 10, 2026, via social media. The deal ensures Bourgault remains in the organization as a depth forward with potential for growth. With his AHL performance trending upward, the team hopes he can eventually become a regular contributor at the NHL level.
