Raptors Sign Head Coach Rajakovic to Multi-Year Extension

The Toronto Raptors have signed head coach Darko Rajakovic to a multi-year contract extension, the team announced Wednesday. The deal, which was finalized Tuesday, ensures Rajakovic will remain at the helm of the Raptors for the foreseeable future.

Details of the Extension

The terms of the extension were not disclosed, but sources familiar with the negotiations confirmed that the deal is for three additional years, taking Rajakovic through the 2029-30 season. Rajakovic, 45, completed his third season as head coach in 2025-26, leading the team to a 42-40 record and a playoff berth.

According to a team spokesperson, the extension reflects the organization's confidence in Rajakovic's leadership and his ability to develop young talent. The Raptors have seen growth from players like Scottie Barnes and Gradey Dick under his guidance.

Rajakovic's Tenure with the Raptors

Rajakovic was hired as head coach in June 2023, succeeding Nick Nurse. In his first season, the Raptors finished 25-57, missing the playoffs. However, the team improved to 35-47 in 2024-25 and made the play-in tournament. This past season, they secured the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference before losing in the first round to the Boston Celtics in six games.

“Darko has done an outstanding job building a culture of hard work and accountability,” said Raptors president Masai Ujiri in a statement. “We are excited to continue this journey with him leading our team.”

Rajakovic, a native of Serbia, previously served as an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns, and Memphis Grizzlies before taking the Raptors job. He also coached the Serbian national team at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

Impact on the Raptors' Future

The extension provides stability for a team that is in the midst of a roster transition. With key players like Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet having departed in recent years, the Raptors are building around a younger core. Rajakovic's development-focused approach aligns with the team's long-term strategy.

“I am grateful for the trust the organization has placed in me,” Rajakovic said in a release. “We have a great group of players and staff, and I look forward to what we can achieve together.”

The Raptors open the 2026-27 season in October against the New York Knicks.
