The Edmonton Oilers face a critical decision as defenceman Darnell Nurse is expected to be traded. In response, the team must prioritize re-signing unrestricted free agent Connor Murphy, who proved to be a valuable asset after being acquired from Chicago at the trade deadline.
Murphy's Impact on the Oilers
Murphy seamlessly partnered with Nurse on the right side over the final two months of the season. In 20 regular-season games, he averaged 20 minutes and 27 seconds of ice time, and in six playoff appearances, his average increased to 21 minutes and 17 seconds while posting a plus-4 rating. Losing both Nurse and Murphy would leave a significant void on the Oilers' blue line.
Contract and Coach Uncertainty
A three-to-four-year contract for Murphy appears likely, especially with Mattias Ekholm entering the first year of his three-year, $4 million deal. However, the Oilers currently lack a head coach, which adds complexity to Murphy's decision. Agent Steve Bartlett noted that while Murphy is interested in re-signing, he wants clarity on the coaching situation. “It’s not a case where he feels negatively about Edmonton in any way… but there’s two and a half weeks left and we’ll see what happens with the coach,” Bartlett said.
Bartlett emphasized that the coach is just one factor among many, including taxes, climate, and teammates. He also stated that Nurse's potential departure should not affect Murphy's decision, describing Murphy as an adaptable and low-maintenance teammate.
Oilers' Offseason Moves
General manager Stan Bowman is reportedly exploring trades for Nurse, who provided a list of three to five approved teams. Bowman may need to retain part of Nurse's $9.25 million cap hit to facilitate a deal while seeking a cheaper left defenceman in return. The question remains whether any replacement can log the 21 minutes per game that Nurse provided.
Despite the Oilers' early playoff exit this season, Bartlett remains optimistic: “Hopefully, the Oilers still have a lot of good pieces.” The team aims to retool and return to contention, making Murphy's re-signing a key priority.
