Oilers' Final Big Trade: Master Plan for Summer 2026

The Edmonton Oilers are poised to execute one more significant trade this summer, dealing a bottom-pairing defenseman for a third or fourth line forward, according to insider reports. This move, while not the blockbuster some fans anticipate, is seen as a critical component of the team's master plan for the 2026-27 season.

Stauffer's Insight on Potential Trade

Edmonton insider Bob Stauffer of Oilers Now has been shaping this narrative on his radio show. On Tuesday, Stauffer stated, “I could foresee a scenario where Edmonton moves a defenceman in the $1.5 million range — possibly for a bottom six forward — to another team and then has accruing cap space and looks at addressing a Top 6 (forward) need during the course of the season. That I could see happening.” He emphasized that the Oilers are not looking to spend heavily now, noting, “I think Edmonton is only looking for like a million or a $2 million player.”

Competition on the Blue Line

Stauffer also highlighted the battle for the third-pairing right-side position between newcomer Shakir Mukhamadullin and returning Ty Emberson. “I believe we’re gonna see a battle between Mukhamadullin and Ty Emberson for the third-pairing right shot. I know Mukumadulin’s a lefty. He played, I’m told, a lot on the right side last year,” Stauffer said.

No Massive Moves Expected Yet

With Claude Giroux signing back in Ottawa, no obvious massive moves remain for the Oilers. The lineup is significantly improved in net and on the blue line, but forward additions may be needed later. The time is not yet right for general manager Stan Bowman to pounce; the early winter of 2027, when other teams fall out of the playoff race and become sellers, is seen as the ideal window. By then, Edmonton will have a clearer picture of its exact needs for the playoffs.

Prediction: Stastney Traded for Fourth-Line Centre

If betting, the Oilers are likely to trade Spencer Stastney for a fourth-line centre. Stastney struggled last year and is a left shot, where Edmonton has the most depth. Emberson, who played well last year, brings toughness and grit—qualities the Oilers can use.

This strategic move reflects the Oilers' broader plan to accrue cap space and address top-six forward needs during the season, ensuring they are well-positioned for a deep playoff run.
