The Edmonton Oilers selected Swedish forward Malcolm Gastrin with the 84th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, adding a relentless, two-way forward known for his playmaking and work ethic.
Scouting Reports Highlight Motor and Skill
According to Tony Brar of Oilers TV, Gastrin turns 18 in August and played for Modo Hockey's U18, U20, and men's teams in Sweden this season. Brar described him as a "playmaking, two-way forward."
Scout Felix Robbins of McKeen's Hockey Prospects praised Gastrin's work ethic and physical play. "Excellent on-ice work ethic and motor. Great straight-line skater. Plays with physical edge," Robbins said.
Potential and Development Path
Oilers prospect expert Bruce Curlock noted Gastrin's skill and youth but cautioned about his slight frame. "Gastrin I only saw a few times. You can see some of the skill in him and the brain. He’s super young which is good. However, he is very slight. Again, higher ceiling, but long road," Curlock said.
The Pro Hockey Group, founded by former NHL scouting director Jason Bukala, reported: "Gastrin is a creative, skilled forward who thrives with the puck on his stick. His vision, playmaking ability and offensive instincts allow him to consistently create chances, making him an intriguing offensive talent."
Youth a Key Factor
Edmonton hockey writer Mathew Panchyshyn emphasized Gastrin's age as an advantage. "Now Gastrin is a pick I like. Some raw talent in finding the slot, some playmaking and other subtle pieces of the game that matter. Not undersized. Importantly, he is very young. 17 still. Typically that's an important detail as younger players grow better," Panchyshyn said.
Gastrin was the Oilers' second selection in the 2026 draft, following their first-round pick of a big Latvian center. More details on the Oilers' draft class are expected to follow.
