The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to trade defenseman Darnell Nurse to the San Jose Sharks, according to a report from Elliotte Friedman. The move involves no salary retention by the Oilers.
Trade Details
Heading back to Edmonton in the deal is left-shot defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin. The 6'4", 200-pound blueliner was a first-round pick of the New Jersey Devils in the 2020 NHL Draft. Mukhamadullin has played parts of three NHL seasons with the Sharks. In 50 games last season, he recorded 5 goals and 7 assists for 12 points, along with 22 penalty minutes and a minus-3 rating.
Mukhamadullin is a restricted free agent coming off a $1 million cap hit in 2026.
Impact on the Oilers
The trade clears significant salary cap space for the Oilers, as Nurse carries a substantial contract. By moving him without retention, Edmonton frees up funds for other roster moves. The acquisition of Mukhamadullin, a young defenseman with upside, provides a cost-controlled option on the blue line.
More details on the trade are expected to emerge shortly.
