Daniel Alfredsson Leaves Senators to Join Maple Leafs as Assistant Coach
Daniel Alfredsson Joins Maple Leafs Coaching Staff

Former Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson has agreed to leave his position as an assistant coach on Travis Green's staff to join the arch-rival Toronto Maple Leafs as an associate coach under head coach Jim Hiller. The move, confirmed by the Leafs on July 7, 2026, marks a significant shift for the longtime Senator, who spent 18 seasons as a player in Ottawa and two years as an assistant coach.

Alfredsson's New Role with the Maple Leafs

Alfredsson will join a coaching staff that includes John Gruden and Brad Werenka. Gruden, who previously coached the Toronto Marlies to a Calder Cup championship last season, brings extensive AHL experience. Werenka offers a mix of NHL playing experience, player development, and performance analytics expertise.

“I’m incredibly excited to add Daniel, John and Brad to our coaching staff,” Hiller said. “Daniel’s experience, leadership and understanding of the game speak for themselves.”

Reunion with Mats Sundin

Alfredsson will be reunited with his former Team Sweden teammate Mats Sundin, who currently leads the Leafs' front office. The two played together for Sweden in international competitions, including the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Impact on the Senators and Leafs Rivalry

Alfredsson's departure from Ottawa to Toronto adds a new chapter to the historic rivalry between the two Original Six franchises. During his playing career, Alfredsson was a central figure in many heated battles between the Senators and Maple Leafs. His move to the Leafs' coaching staff is expected to draw strong reactions from fans in both cities.

“John has established himself as one of the top coaches in the American Hockey League and played an instrumental role in leading the Marlies to a Calder Cup championship last season,” Hiller added. “Brad brings a unique combination of NHL experience, player development and expertise in performance analytics. Together, they’ll be outstanding additions to our team.”

Alfredsson's tenure with the Senators as a player included 1,178 games, 426 goals, and 1,157 points, making him one of the franchise's all-time leaders. He also served as team captain for 13 seasons. As an assistant coach, he helped guide the Senators' young roster under Green.

The Leafs are expected to announce further details of the coaching staff's responsibilities in the coming days.
