Calgary Stampeders all-time sack leader Charleston Hughes was officially inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. The veteran defensive end, who spent the majority of his career with the Stampeders, is widely regarded as one of the most dominant pass rushers in CFL history.
Hughes' Stellar Career
Hughes, a native of Saginaw, Michigan, played 14 seasons in the CFL, primarily with Calgary. He recorded 141 career sacks, the second-most in league history, and was a key contributor to the Stampeders' Grey Cup victory in 2018. His 130 sacks with Calgary are a franchise record, surpassing the previous mark held by Hall of Famer Harold Hallman.
Throughout his career, Hughes earned multiple accolades, including being named a CFL All-Star six times and winning the league's Most Outstanding Defensive Player award in 2017. He also played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Toronto Argonauts before retiring after the 2023 season.
Impact on the Game
"Charleston Hughes was a game-changer every time he stepped on the field," said CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie in a statement. "His relentless pursuit of quarterbacks and his leadership made him a cornerstone of the Stampeders' defense for over a decade."
Hughes' induction was part of the 2026 Hall of Fame class, which also includes former offensive lineman and fellow Stampeder John Hufnagel, as well as other notable CFL figures. The formal enshrinement ceremony will take place during Grey Cup week in November.
Legacy in Calgary
Stampeders President Jay McNeil praised Hughes for his contributions both on and off the field. "Charleston embodied the spirit of the Stampeders and the city of Calgary. His work ethic and passion for the game inspired countless fans and teammates," McNeil said.
Hughes' number 39 jersey was retired by the Stampeders in 2024, and he remains active in the community through charitable initiatives focused on youth sports and education.
