Welcome to NHL free agency, which should be far from a frenzy for the Vancouver Canucks. General manager Ryan Johnson has made it clear that the team's approach will be pragmatic, focusing on smart, prudent moves rather than big splashes.
Pragmatic Approach to Free Agency
For the rebuilding Canucks, the priority is to acquire high-character players who can build a better culture, support young defencemen, and bring a physical element. Johnson emphasized the need for veterans who can protect and guide the team's younger, more vulnerable players. According to Johnson, the focus is on making prudent, predictable plays rather than attempting to hit a home run.
Potential Targets and Re-Signings
One potential target is bringing back Ian Cole, as suggested by CHEK-TV's Rick Dhaliwal. Cole is coming off an outstanding season with Utah and could provide veteran stability on the blue line. If not Cole, Luke Schenn might be an alternative, which would mark his third stint with the Canucks.
On Tuesday, the Canucks re-signed defenceman Guillaume Brisebois to a one-year, two-way deal worth $900,000 in the NHL and $325,000 in the AHL. Brisebois, who has battled injuries since turning pro in 2017, is known as a quality person who never complains. He is more likely to serve as a steady veteran presence in the AHL.
Free Agent Market Updates
One probable unrestricted free agent target, A.J. Greer, signed a four-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks worth an average annual value of $4.25 million. Greer, 29, was a top-six lineup staple known for his size, speed, and defensive responsibility. He led the Panthers with a plus-14 rating, 203 hits, and 113 penalty minutes.
Another target still available is big centre Kevin Stenlund, 29, of the Utah Mammoth. Stenlund led his club in faceoff percentage (54.2%), shot blocks (61), and short-handed ice time. He would add structure, guidance, and penalty-kill presence. His expiring cap hit was $2 million.
