The Calgary Blizzard Soccer Club is set to take on a monumental challenge as they face Major League Soccer's CF Montreal in the first round of the 2026 TELUS Canadian Championship. The match, scheduled for Wednesday at Stade Saputo in Montreal, marks the Blizzard's debut in the prestigious tournament, which determines Canada's national soccer champion.
Head coach Ramón Mifflin expressed both excitement and humility ahead of the clash. "We get to play in a Major League Soccer stadium against a Major League Soccer club — a team that has seven national team players," Mifflin said. "We're just a humble, young club, right? We're Blizzard Soccer Club. We're young, we've got energy, we're fit, we're athletic … but we don't have that experience at the pro level."
The Blizzard earned their spot in the Canadian Championship by winning the League1 Alberta title last summer with an impressive record of 10 wins, 1 loss, and 5 ties. This victory qualified them for the expanded 15-team bracket, which includes three MLS sides, eight Canadian Premier League teams, and four League1 Canada winners from across the country.
Mifflin emphasized the importance of preparation and mindset. "If you play an MLS club, it's kind of like winning the lottery. But it's a super difficult proposition, right? All you can do is prepare for it. I tell the boys, 'Hey … just be fit, be ready and be inspired and just put on a show — enjoy yourself and enjoy the experience. And you never know what can happen.' Let's prepare for it. Let's have some fun with it."
The Blizzard flew to Montreal on Tuesday to acclimate and prepare for the match. Mifflin noted the professional treatment the team is receiving, including covered expenses and flights. "The impact of playing an MLS club is they kind of do it properly, right? So they fly us out, they cover all our expenses. It's like a treatment we've never had before."
Meanwhile, Calgary's other representative in the tournament, Cavalry FC, begins its campaign on Saturday against Pacific FC in Langford, British Columbia. The Cavalry, a Canadian Premier League side, is a regular participant in the Canadian Championship and will face a fellow CPL rival in the first round.
For fans in Calgary, a watch party for the Blizzard match will be held at The Banquet in the University District, with tickets available through the club's website.
A Historic Opportunity
The Canadian Championship has grown in recent years, with Canada Soccer adding four League1 Canada champions to the competition. This expansion has provided opportunities for semi-professional clubs like the Blizzard to test themselves against top-tier opposition. The tournament features four rounds, culminating in a champion being awarded the Voyageurs Cup.
Mifflin acknowledged the significance of the moment for his players. "The boys earned it. They played phenomenal last during League1 last year to win it. And the carrot was to play in the Canadian Championship."
As the Blizzard prepare to take the field against CF Montreal, the team is focused on making the most of this rare opportunity. Whether they pull off an upset or not, the experience will be invaluable for the young squad.
