Alphonso Davies Nears Return as Canada Trains for World Cup

Canada's captain Alphonso Davies is getting closer to returning to game action after participating fully in warm-up during Monday's training session in Vancouver. The media was allowed to observe only the 15-minute warm-up window, during which Davies ran with his teammates and showed no signs of discomfort.

Davies' Injury Progress

Davies suffered a hamstring injury in early May while playing for Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinal. He remains in 'return to play' status, meaning he is not yet fully ready for a match, but his condition is improving significantly. The exact timeline for his return remains unknown, and no official update is expected on Monday, as head coach Jesse Marsch and Davies are not speaking to the media after practice.

However, the aggressive nature of his warm-up is a positive indicator. If he is classified as training in full, he could be an option for Thursday's Group B World Cup game against Qatar at B.C. Place. Alternatively, he might be ready for the match against Switzerland next week.

Other Squad Updates

Defender Moise Bombito was seen working one-on-one with the team's strength and conditioning staff before training, focusing on resistance exercises to rebuild strength in his left leg. Bombito broke his left tibia last October while playing for Nice in France. He managed 30 minutes in Canada's warm-up match against Uzbekistan on June 1 but left the field in discomfort and was later seen icing his lower leg. Marsch acknowledged that Bombito felt discomfort during that match. Since then, Bombito has been in the matchday squad twice but has not played.

Richie Laryea started at left back in Canada's World Cup opener against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday, taking Davies' usual position. The team is preparing for their next match against Qatar on Thursday at B.C. Place.
