Father of Nakiska Avalanche Victim Describes 'Immense' Community Support

Filip Hrazdira, father of 15-year-old Emilio Hrazdira who was killed in an avalanche at Nakiska ski hill on February 27, 2026, has spoken about the overwhelming support from friends, family, and the ski racing community during this difficult time.

A Community in Mourning

"I can't even begin to describe it," Filip Hrazdira said of the support his family has received. "We've had a full house ever since. It's been standing room only." He noted that this outpouring of support is exactly what his son would have wanted, describing Emilio as an attention-seeker who was always smiling, joking around, and doing silly things.

Remembering Emilio's Spirit

Emilio was known for his boundless energy and determination. "He wasn't afraid to take risks — I guess it's telling that he got caught in an avalanche," his father reflected. "He was willing to push harder than anyone I knew. He wanted to go fast, he wanted to go high, he wanted to go far. I think he did more in those 15 years than most will do in a lifetime."

Skiing was Emilio's primary passion, and he was an active member of the Lake Louise Ski Club, which his father described as "his family." Filip expressed deep gratitude for the ski racing community, saying, "I love ski racing, love the community, but going through this now — they're so incredible. It's such an incredible community."

The Tragic Incident

Emilio had been at Nakiska with his mother for a race scheduled for Friday afternoon. When the race was cancelled due to heavy snowfall, he and a friend decided to free ski instead. Both boys were caught in an avalanche while skiing inbounds. Emilio's friend managed to escape unharmed and immediately assisted with the rescue efforts.

"The whole ski race community was then behind him to get him out, to rescue him," Filip explained. "The boy he was with made a lot of really good choices afterwards. He called the right people, got the right people mobilized as soon as possible to be able to find him."

Rescue Efforts

Because it was a ski race day, there were volunteers, parents, and coaches at the top of the course with tools ready. They used a bamboo stick to probe the area where Emilio was last seen and found him quickly. Friends and members of the ski community pulled him out before emergency medical services took over.

STARS air ambulance was unable to fly due to weather conditions, but an experienced pilot in a helicopter that could operate in those conditions transported Emilio to the Alberta Children's Hospital. He was found unresponsive and in critical condition, and tragically passed away on Saturday morning.

Filip Hrazdira expressed profound gratitude for everyone who participated in the rescue efforts and for the ongoing support from the community that has helped his family through this unimaginable loss.
