Justin Kent and Makenna Fitzgerald Triumph at 2026 Vancouver Sun Run

In a thrilling display of athletic prowess, Justin Kent and Makenna Fitzgerald claimed top honors at the 2026 Vancouver Sun Run on Sunday, April 19. The event, which drew a massive crowd of 57,518 participants, showcased intense competition and inspiring personal stories.

Fitzgerald's Surprise Victory Over Olympic Stars

Makenna Fitzgerald, a 26-year-old native of Kamloops now residing in Cochrane, Alberta, secured the women's title in her Sun Run debut with a time of 32 minutes and 24 seconds. Fitzgerald expressed astonishment at her win, especially after seeing the start list that included Canadian Olympians Malindi Elmore, Natasha Wodak, and Dayna Pidhoresky.

"I saw the start list and I was like, 'Oh man.' It was a lot of people that I really look up to," Fitzgerald admitted. "Getting to start with gals like that is always a really good experience. I was just like 'OK, we'll see how it goes.'"

Her performance shattered her personal best of 34:10, marking a significant achievement in her running career. Fitzgerald, who initially focused on hockey in her youth, discovered her passion for running at Queen's University. Her rapid ascent in the sport includes representing Canada at the 2019 under-20 world championships and this year's senior cross-country worlds.

Kent's Redemption and Rivalry

On the men's side, Burnaby's Justin Kent, 33, clinched his second Sun Run title with a time of 28:40, narrowly defeating Kelowna's John Gay, who finished at 28:44. This victory flipped the script from the 2023 event, where Gay had edged out Kent by three seconds.

"He's had my number quite a few times," Kent said of Gay. "It's a good rivalry. And he's one of the nicest guys on the circuit. He's a worthy competitor. I know that whenever he steps up to the line I've got to be at my best, too."

Kent, who works as a brand manager for Stoko, balances his training with a full-time job and fatherhood. He emphasized the mental and physical growth since his first Sun Run win in 2019, noting he now feels stronger aerobically and more determined.

Event Highlights and Historical Context

The Vancouver Sun Run, founded by Dr. Doug and Diane Clement and Dr. Jack Taunton in 1985, has grown from 3,200 runners to become Canada's largest 10-kilometre road race and the third largest timed 10-kilometre event in North America. This year's edition featured:

  • Women's podium: Makenna Fitzgerald (1st, 32:24), Malindi Elmore (2nd, 32:38), and other top finishers including Natasha Wodak and Dayna Pidhoresky.
  • Men's podium: Justin Kent (1st, 28:40), John Gay (2nd, 28:44).
  • Diverse participation: Over 57,000 competitors of various skill levels, highlighting the event's community appeal.

Fitzgerald's journey from hockey player to elite runner underscores the unpredictable nature of sports, while Kent's dedication amid life changes exemplifies resilience. Both winners celebrated their connections to Vancouver, with Kent noting the race's significance in his local circle and Fitzgerald appreciating the support from fellow athletes.

As the Sun Run continues to inspire, this year's event not only crowned new champions but also reinforced the spirit of competition and personal achievement in one of Canada's premier athletic gatherings.
