Declan McNally is Essex County's next big product set to burst onto the Ontario Hockey League scene. The LaSalle native is expected to be a first-round pick in Friday's OHL Draft, with many believing the six-foot-six, 185-pound defenceman will go inside the top 10.
"I'm super excited and really pumped," said the 15-year-old McNally. "It's obviously a fun and exciting time and something I've been waiting a long time for."
Journey to the OHL Draft
McNally spent three seasons with the Sun County Panthers program before opting to take his final step to the OHL Draft with the Don Mills Flyers this past season. He and his family discussed the best path for his U16 season, ultimately deciding Don Mills was the best fit.
"It was super smooth," McNally said. "My billet family was awesome, we had two training camps, so it made it easier getting to know the guys and the coaches."
Scouting Report: More Than Just Size
Scouts refer to McNally as an imposing figure on the back end, but there is more to his game than just his size. He describes himself as a versatile 200-foot defenceman who can play both ends of the ice. "I can skate for my size and get up in the play," he added. McNally played the power play, killed penalties, and logged regular shifts with Don Mills.
Family Legacy in the OHL
McNally has a long family history with the OHL. His brother Kieran was selected by Sarnia in 2023, and his father Mike was a North Bay selection in 1994. Cousins Calum and Ethan Ritchie also played in the league. "I'm a huge OHL fan," McNally said.
Regarding his draft destination, McNally remains open-minded. "It doesn't matter to me where I get drafted. I'm just looking to get drafted. I think I can prove I belong. At the end of the day, I want to go to the team that wants me and develops my game."
