Toronto Rock Wins Overtime Thriller Against Halifax Thunderbirds

The Toronto Rock secured a thrilling 14-13 overtime victory against the Halifax Thunderbirds in a National Lacrosse League matchup that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final moment. Josh Dawick emerged as the hero, scoring his first hat trick of the season and delivering the game-winning goal just 5:58 into the extra period.

Dramatic Finish in Halifax

Dawick, who scored 40 goals during the 2025 season, received a crucial pass from teammate Challen Rogers near the left boards before maneuvering into a better shooting position. His low shot beat Halifax goaltender Warren Hill, ending what players and coaches described as an exceptionally entertaining contest at Scotiabank Centre.

"We are just continuing to strive for consistency," Dawick said after the game. "It's always hard to play here and we knew that was the type of game it was going to be. Thrilled to come out on the right end of that one."

Back-and-Forth Battle

The game featured multiple lead changes with neither team ever establishing more than a two-goal advantage. The Thunderbirds appeared to have momentum when Brendan Bomberry beat Rock goaltender Nick Rose with just 22 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Rogers, who has transitioned from a defensive specialist to an offensive contributor, scored the goal that tied the game at 12-12 and then put Toronto ahead moments later before Bomberry's dramatic equalizer.

Balanced Scoring Attack

Owen Hiltz contributed three goals for the Rock, while Latrell Harris, Mark Matthews, Dan Craig, and Chris Boushy each found the net. Sam English delivered what coaches called the best performance of his young career, and recent acquisition Josh Jackson, obtained from the Las Vegas Desert Dogs at Monday's trade deadline, also scored.

For the Thunderbirds, Clarke Petterson recorded an impressive 10-point night with three goals and seven assists. Mike Robinson added three goals, while Bomberry and Cody Jamieson scored twice each. Curtis Romanchych, Will MacLeod, and Jason Knox rounded out Halifax's scoring with single goals.

Playoff Implications

The victory improves Toronto's record to 8-5 as the team has now won two consecutive games. Rock head coach Matt Sawyer emphasized the importance of building momentum as the season progresses.

"There's still a lot of lacrosse to be played and we're just trying to get better each and every week," Sawyer said. "We feel like we've been making strides and tonight it was important to follow up last week's performance with another real good one."
