Zeev Buium: The Vancouver Canucks' Next Defensive Dynamo

Zeev Buium is rapidly establishing himself as the next major talent on the Vancouver Canucks' evolving defensive lineup. At only 20 years old, the young blueliner is receiving glowing reviews for his confident play and rapid development within the organization.

Swagger and Skill on Display

Buium plays with noticeable swagger and enjoys exploring Vancouver alongside fellow young defensemen Elias Pettersson and Tom Willander. His impressive resume includes championships at three significant development levels: Under-18, world junior, and world championship tournaments. Currently, he is making substantial progress through master-class instruction while logging first-pairing minutes alongside veteran Filip Hronek.

"He's got the swagger, the vision and ability. It's managing the clock, his opponents and teammates. He's a pretty bright guy," said Canucks head coach Adam Foote, emphasizing Buium's hockey intelligence and adaptability.

Trade Background and Current Performance

Buium's journey to Vancouver came via a major December 12 trade that sent former Canucks captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. In return, Vancouver acquired Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, Buium, and a 2026 first-round draft pick. Buium will face his former team and Hughes on Thursday in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Through 67 games this season, Buium has recorded 23 points (5 goals, 18 assists), ranking fourth in scoring among rookie defensemen. However, he has struggled with a minus-25 rating, reflecting the typical ups and downs of a young player's development.

"This whole year has been a lot of ups-and-downs and some games it's like that, but we've pieced better games together," Buium told Postmedia News, discussing his progress in decision-making.

Learning from the Elite

Buium actively studies top NHL defensemen to enhance his game. He cites Quinn Hughes, Josh Morrissey, Roman Josi, Rasmus Dahlin, and Cale Makar as players he watches closely, attempting to incorporate elements of their styles into his own play.

"There are a few guys, and obviously, Quinn was one of them," Buium acknowledged. "A guy like Morrissey is someone I like to watch. He's similar to me and uses a shorter stick as well. Just the way we skate is similar."

He particularly admires Hughes' willingness to listen, learn, and constantly improve while excelling against elite competition under intense scrutiny.

Coach's Perspective and Future Outlook

Coach Foote has been impressed with Buium's fearlessness and quick learning curve through 68 career NHL games.

"He's going to learn there are times when he's feeling it, but I like how he's not intimidated by the traffic," Foote observed. "He picks up on things to create separation. And his positional play in his own zone is pretty good."

Buium has one year remaining on his entry-level contract, but there is already speculation about a potential long-term commitment to the 6-foot, 183-pound San Diego native. Selected 12th overall by the Wild in the 2024 draft, his development suggests he will attract increasing forechecking attention as his game improves.

The Hughes Legacy and Lessons

Hughes set a high standard during his time in Vancouver, playing through injuries and setting franchise production records. His development included significant lifestyle adjustments—improving diet, training smarter, and reducing social media engagement to focus on hockey.

"I just wanted to feel better and not grind through games," Hughes explained about his changes. "The changes I made I'm still feeling now. You can get two points and not play great, but six shots and creating and playing well defensively, that's the process."

Buium, while younger and still enjoying Vancouver's neighborhoods like Yaletown and Gastown, will eventually need to find his own balance between enjoyment and professional focus—a lesson Hughes mastered during his tenure with the Canucks.

As Buium continues his development, the Canucks organization and fans are watching closely, hopeful that this promising defenseman will become a cornerstone of Vancouver's blue line for years to come.
