Despite below-freezing temperatures and swirling snow flurries across the city on Sunday morning, dedicated soccer fans in Calgary braved the elements for a rare opportunity. The chance to see the FIFA World Cup Trophy up close doesn't come around often, especially in a city like Calgary, and enthusiasts flocked to the Saddledome to lay eyes on one of the sports world's most sacred prizes.
An Unforgettable Experience for Local Supporters
"It's a crazy experience, to see THE World Cup," said Moustapha Kromphol, who attended the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour with his brother, Karim. "The greats have touched it, so it's going to be an experience we'll never, ever forget. I'll tell you that."
The event featured FIFA Legend Roque Junior unveiling the 18-karat solid gold trophy on stage alongside dignitaries, creating a memorable spectacle for attendees. Fans proudly wore jerseys from nations like Brazil, Argentina, England, and Spain, snapping photos with the iconic cup and testing their skills with soccer ball activities.
Tour Builds Excitement for Upcoming World Cup
The trophy tour is making seven stops across Canada in the two months leading up to the World Cup, which kicks off on June 11 when Mexico hosts South Africa at the famed Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Canada is co-hosting the tournament with the U.S. and Mexico, with Toronto and Vancouver set to host 13 games.
While Calgary itself won't host any matchups and lacks a stadium meeting FIFA's requirements, the excitement has clearly spread among the city's soccer community. "It's pretty awesome," said Erik Kueber, who plans to attend two World Cup games this summer with his family. "Ever since I was younger I've been a fan of soccer and now that the World Cup is coming to Canada, it's pretty exciting."
Kueber added that his family will see Morocco vs. Haiti and Congo vs. Uzbekistan, highlighting the global appeal of the event.
Community Engagement and Lasting Memories
Attendees like Mark Pannekoek and his 9-year-old son Hudson explored group stage match displays, while Cavalry FC supporter Darren Morris marveled at the trophy. Kathy Murphy was seen enjoying interactive displays, showcasing the tour's broad appeal across ages and backgrounds.
The snowy conditions did little to dampen spirits, as fans embraced the chance to connect with soccer history. The tour stop served as a sneak preview of the excitement building for this summer's tournament, where the world's best players will compete for glory on Canadian soil.
