The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's hockey team delivered an impressive performance on the road, securing back-to-back victories against the MacEwan University Griffins during a weekend of intense action. This successful road trip improves the Huskies' record to a formidable 8-3-1, solidifying their hold on second place within the Canada West East Division.
Dominant Hockey Performances Lead the Way
The weekend series showcased the Huskies' offensive firepower. On Friday night, Chantz Petruic was the undeniable star, scoring a hat-trick to propel the "Dogs" to a decisive 6-3 win over the Griffins. The team didn't let up the following evening, with Dawson Holt and Chase Bertholet each netting two goals in a commanding 5-2 victory that completed the weekend sweep.
Women's Hockey Splits Series at Home
While the men's team dominated on the road, the Huskies women's hockey team, hosting the Griffins, experienced a split decision. The weekend opened strong for the women's squad, as goaltender Colby Wilson turned away all 10 shots she faced on Friday to record a shutout in a 2-0 win. However, Saturday night told a different story, with the Griffins mounting a third-period comeback, scoring three goals to defeat the Huskies 3-2. The split leaves the women's team with a 6-4-2 record, good for third place in the East Division.
Huskies Basketball Teams See Contrasting Fortunes
The action extended beyond the ice rink, where the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's basketball team continued their perfect season. A pair of wins over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds extends their unblemished record to 8-0, keeping them in a four-way tie for the top spot in the Canada West Prairie Division.
On Friday, Gage Grassick led the charge with 27 points in an 80-51 rout of the Thunderbirds. The team maintained its offensive dominance on Saturday, with Tea DeMong contributing 22 points to secure a 93-70 victory.
Unfortunately, the men's basketball team's struggles continued, as they suffered two more losses to UBC. A narrow 86-82 defeat on Friday, despite 22 points from Dylan Miller, was followed by a more lopsided 83-52 loss on Saturday, where Easton Thimm scored 16 points. The team's record now stands at 1-7 for the season.
Saskatoon Blades Split Home Series
In WHL action, the Saskatoon Blades saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. The Blades started the weekend strong at the SaskTel Centre, edging the Swift Current Broncos 3-2 on Friday. The game-winner was netted by Tyrone Sobry, marking his first goal of the season.
The momentum, however, didn't carry into Saturday night. The visiting Brandon Wheat Kings scored twice in the second period to take a lead they would not relinquish, handing the Blades a 3-2 loss. With a record of 14-9-2-0, the Blades currently sit fourth in the WHL's Eastern Conference. They will look to get back on track when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers on November 28.
