Day 4 of the Calgary Stampeders' main camp saw the wide receivers take center stage, with free-agent signee Dejon Brissett drawing significant attention. The Canadian receiver brings a wealth of experience, including two Grey Cup championships with the Toronto Argonauts, to a Stampeders squad looking to bolster its pass-catching group.
Brissett's Versatility and Experience
Brissett, who signed a two-year deal with Calgary in February, has impressed coaches and teammates alike with his adaptability. He can play all five receiver positions, providing the Stampeders with flexibility in their offensive schemes. 'I would say I'm a jack of all trades,' Brissett said. 'I can play every position — I can play all five. I can stretch the field, get downfield, jump up and go get the ball. I can also block, as well.'
His knowledge of the offense has also eased his transition. Having played under head coach Ryan Dinwiddie in Toronto, who previously served as the Stampeders' quarterbacks coach, Brissett found similarities in the playbook. 'Definitely, it's very similar to Toronto,' he noted. 'There's some differences with the words and the positions. But for the most part, it's pretty much the same thing. So I'm flowing right in.'
Filling Key Losses
The Stampeders entered camp needing to replace key departures in their receiving corps. American Dominique Rhymes, last year's leading receiver with 886 yards, retired, while Canadian Damien Alford, the top pick in the 2025 CFL Draft, signed with the NFL's New Orleans Saints. Brissett is expected to help fill that void alongside quarterback Vernon Adams Jr.
Stampeders general manager and head coach Dave Dickenson expressed confidence in Brissett's fit. 'Very impressed with his knowledge base and also his work ethic and his attitude,' Dickenson said. 'I think he's going to fit in great. And we're looking for him to be a Stamp for a long time.'
Plans for Brissett
Dickenson outlined plans to utilize Brissett's versatility by moving him around the field. 'What we want to do is move him around on the field,' Dickenson said. 'We want to put him in at wide-out sometimes and in the slot. Use it. Use what he's best at, and we're trying to get to know him a little bit. What is he best at, and what are some things that we think he gives us the best option?'
In 2025, Brissett led the Argonauts in receiving with 907 yards on 65 catches. The Stampeders hope he can replicate that production as they prepare for the upcoming season.
