Calgary Stampeders Strengthen Defence with Veteran Re-Signing
The Calgary Stampeders have made a significant move to reinforce their defensive unit by re-signing veteran linebacker Derrick Moncrief. This announcement, made on Monday, stands out among the team's off-season efforts to retain key players, highlighting Moncrief's importance both on and off the field.
Leadership and Performance on Display
Stampeders GM and head coach Dave Dickenson expressed enthusiasm about bringing back Moncrief, stating, "We're excited to bring back another piece of the core of our team. Derrick is a great leader, and he plays the game the right way." Moncrief, who was eligible to become a free agent on February 10, has inked a new contract with the Stamps, ensuring his continued presence in the lineup.
In the 2025 season, his first with the Red and White, Moncrief started all 18 regular-season games at the strong-side linebacker position. His impressive stats included:
- 67 defensive tackles
- A league-leading 12 tackles for losses
- Two interceptions, one returned 70 yards for a touchdown
- One forced fumble
- One fumble recovery
- Six knockdowns
His contributions were recognized by teammates, who voted him the winner of the Presidents' Ring award for excellence both on and off the field. Additionally, Moncrief was honoured on the Canadian Football League Players Association's 2025 all-star team.
A Career of Consistent Excellence
Over 107 career regular-season games with the Stampeders, Edmonton Elks, and Saskatchewan Roughriders, Moncrief has compiled a remarkable record:
- 365 defensive tackles
- 12 tackles for losses
- Nine special-teams stops
- 11 sacks
- 12 interceptions
- Two forced fumbles
- One fumble recovery
- 25 knockdowns
Reflecting on his journey, Moncrief shared, "A couple of years ago, I think people thought I was done—they thought I was going to retire and things like that. I just had to look at myself in the mirror and dig deep and envision the success I was going to have. I just had to hit the reset button." He added, "I pride myself on being one of the best football players every time I lace them up. I try to be the best dominant football player in the league—and that's what I've been doing."
Looking Ahead to Year Two
The 32-year-old native of Prattville, Alabama, expressed his excitement about returning to the Stampeders, saying, "What an awesome blessing it is to be re-signing with this world-class organization and also working alongside great people. I'm excited for Year 2 and bringing a Grey Cup to Cowtown. Go Stamps!" Standing at 6-foot-1 and 213 pounds, Moncrief also started in the Western Semi-Final, recording one tackle.
Additional Defensive Reinforcement
In related news, the Stampeders have also re-signed national defensive back Godfrey Onyeka. The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks alum, who was eligible for free agency on February 10, played all 18 regular-season games in his first season with Calgary. His performance included:
- 24 defensive tackles
- A team-leading 17 special-teams tackles
- Two interceptions

Onyeka made his mark in a Week 12 victory over Saskatchewan by intercepting a Trevor Harris pass for the first pick of his CFL career. He also contributed in the Western Semi-Final with one special-teams tackle.
These re-signings signal the Stampeders' commitment to building a robust defence as they aim for success in the upcoming CFL season, with Moncrief's veteran presence and leadership expected to play a pivotal role in their pursuit of a Grey Cup championship.
