The National Basketball Association community is rallying together after a disturbing incident involving racist remarks directed at Hispanic fans during a recent San Antonio Spurs game. A viral TikTok video, captured by user @inluvwganineee, shows a woman apparently using her phone to respond to a message that referenced "crazy Hispanic fans" at the Spurs' playoff-clinching victory over the Phoenix Suns on Thursday.
Spurs Organization Issues Firm Statement
In the clip, a text message attributed to the woman reads, "All Hispanic! How can they afford it." This quickly drew the attention of the San Antonio Spurs, an organization deeply rooted in a city where Hispanic and Latino residents form the majority of the population. On Friday, the Spurs released an official statement addressing the incident.
"All of us in the Spurs organization are proud to live in San Antonio, a city that shines and thrives because of the culture and contributions of our Latino community," the statement declared. "Inclusion is a foundation for the San Antonio Spurs. We strive to provide an environment, in our facilities and across our community, that celebrates belonging and respect regardless of race or ethnicity. Por Vida."
Player Reactions and Community Backlash
Spurs guard De'Aaron Fox also weighed in over the weekend, expressing his disbelief at the racist text. He told reporters that he attended a Texas high school with a student body that was approximately 60% Hispanic. "So for someone to complain about that, especially being in San Antonio, I don't know why that would make any sense. But this should be normalized," Fox stated. "You're going to see people that don't look the same as you, that probably have a different accent as you. So, at this point, you would think it would be normal. But to each their own."
The incident sparked a wave of responses from fans across Texas and beyond on social media platforms. On TikTok, many users shared photos of their premium game-day experiences, directly countering the text's implication. TikToker @itsvalcarter, for instance, posted a snap of herself with a drink just feet from the Spurs' home court at Frost Bank Center, captioning it, "damn right we can afford it✨."
Fans Embrace "Crazy Hispanic Fan" Identity
Sports writer and Spurs enthusiast Shea Serrano proudly took to X, formerly known as Twitter, writing, "legally changing my name to Crazy Hispanic Fan." By Saturday, when the Spurs hosted the Indiana Pacers at home, X users reported seeing numerous fans, including members of the San Antonio Jackals supporters section, wearing shirts emblazoned with "Crazy Hispanic Fan" in various designs throughout the arena.
The Jackals, in a post on X showcasing members in these tees, emphasized their stance against discrimination. "That being said, we will not give power to the ignorant. We are proud of our heritage, our cultura, and our city. There's a reason our hashtag is #PorVida. So yeah, we are crazy Hispanic fans, but don't think for a second that's an insult," the group asserted in their Saturday message.
This incident highlights ongoing issues of racism in sports while showcasing the resilience and pride of the Hispanic community in San Antonio. The Spurs' response underscores their commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, reflecting the city's diverse cultural fabric.
