Windsor Spitfires Dominate Guelph Storm in Historic Playoff Sweep

The Windsor Spitfires have emphatically advanced to the second round of the Ontario Hockey League playoffs after completing a comprehensive series sweep of the Guelph Storm. On Thursday evening at the Sleeman Centre, the Spitfires delivered an overwhelming 11-3 victory to secure a 4-0 series win in the Western Conference quarter-finals.

A Commanding Performance

Second-seeded Windsor demonstrated remarkable consistency and firepower throughout the best-of-seven matchup against seventh-seeded Guelph. The final game showcased the team's offensive depth, with nine different players finding the back of the net. Centre Ethan Garden led the charge with two goals and two assists, contributing significantly to the decisive win.

"It's not easy beating a team four times in a row, and Guelph's a very respectable team," Garden remarked after the game. "It says a lot about our group and how we showed up."

Historical Significance

The victory carried particular historical weight for the franchise. Windsor accomplished two significant feats not seen since the team's back-to-back Memorial Cup championship seasons in 2009 and 2010. The eleven-goal outburst marked the first time the Spitfires have scored double digits in a playoff game since their 10-1 victory over Brampton in the 2009 OHL Final.

Additionally, this series sweep represents the first time Windsor has achieved such a playoff feat since 2010, when the team swept multiple opponents en route to their Memorial Cup victory. Head coach Greg Walters, who coached against those championship teams during his time with Sarnia, recognized the significance of his team's accomplishment.

"We've got a little bit of offence ourselves," Walters noted, referencing how his team outscored the Storm 21-5 across the four-game series. "I've been around a long time, and it's not easy, but they stuck up for each other, played four really good hockey games, and should be proud."

Offensive Firepower on Display

The Spitfires' offensive explosion featured contributions from throughout the lineup. Beyond Garden's multi-point performance, goals came from Liam Greentree, Jack Nesbitt, Johnny McLaughlin, Alex Pharand, Carson Woodall, Andrew Robinson, and Max Brocklehurst. In total, fifteen different Windsor players registered points in the series-clinching victory.

Goaltender Joey Costanzo provided steady netminding throughout the series, turning aside numerous scoring chances from the Storm offense to help secure the sweep.

Special Moment for Veteran Defender

For veteran defenseman Jakub Fibigr, the series victory held extra significance. Acquired in a deadline trade from Brampton, the Seattle Kraken draft pick recorded three assists in Thursday's clinching game. Despite helping Czechia win a silver medal at this year's World Junior Hockey Championship, this marked the first time in Fibigr's three-year OHL career that he has advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

Looking Ahead

With the series sweep complete, the Spitfires now prepare to face the third-seeded Flint Firebirds in the Western Conference semifinals. Flint earned their spot by sweeping the Owen Sound Attack in their first-round series, setting up what promises to be a compelling matchup between two teams riding significant momentum.

The Spitfires' dominant performance against Guelph has not only secured their advancement but has also rekindled memories of the franchise's most successful era, suggesting this year's playoff run could have special potential.
