Windsor Spitfires Sweep Flint Firebirds to Continue Path of 2010 Memorial Cup Championship Team
The Windsor Spitfires are charting a course that feels remarkably familiar, sweeping the Flint Firebirds in the Ontario Hockey League Western Conference semifinals with a decisive 5-3 victory on Thursday at the Dort Financial Center. This win completed a four-game sweep in the best-of-seven series, propelling the Spitfires to the conference final for the second time in four years.
Historic Playoff Start
For the first time in 16 years, the Spitfires have opened the OHL playoffs with back-to-back series sweeps, winning their first eight games. The last time this occurred was in 2010, when the club went on to secure its second Memorial Cup title in consecutive years. "That's pretty sweet to hear," said Spitfires forward Cole Davis, reflecting on the achievement.
The team's performance has sparked optimism among players, with defenceman Carson Woodall, a Belle River native, noting, "Maybe we'll have to keep that tradition going." The Spitfires' head coach, Greg Walters, praised his team's resilience, stating, "The fourth one to win in a series is the toughest to get, and we weathered their first 10 minutes and then really played a solid 50 minutes. We didn't give up much at all."
Game Breakdown and Key Moments
In Thursday's clinching game, the Firebirds opened the scoring and initially dominated with a 9-3 shot advantage. However, the Spitfires quickly regrouped. Davis explained, "We kind of knew they were going to come out flying. Their season was on the line and they brought it to us early, but we weathered the storm. After that, just playing our game."
Windsor took control with power-play goals from Anthony Cristoforo and a two-on-one conversion by Davis, assisted by rookie Johnny McLaughlin, leading 2-1 after two periods. Defencemen Woodall and Jakub Fibigr added third-period goals, and centre Jack Nesbitt sealed the win with an empty-net goal. After allowing 13 Flint shots in the first period, the Spitfires limited the Firebirds to just 10 shots over the final 40 minutes.
Defensive Dominance and Star Shutdown
A key to the sweep was Windsor's defensive strategy, which effectively neutralized Flint's top scorers. The Firebirds had entered the series after a first-round sweep of Owen Sound, setting an OHL record with 35 goals in four games. Against the Spitfires, they managed only 11 goals total.
"Shutting down their top guys was a big game plan," Woodall emphasized. "We saw what they did in the first series, and that was a big thing. We put in a lot of work, and all the guys bought in. We played the right way and won all four games."
Flint's Jacob Battaglia, who led the OHL in playoff scoring with 15 points in the first round, was held to three points and a minus-six rating against Windsor. Similarly, Nathan Aspinall, second in league scoring during the regular season with 13 points in the first round, managed only four points and was minus-two in this series. Davis, who is friends with Aspinall, shared, "In the faceoff circle, he was telling me how frustrated he was from how tough we were playing him and not letting him get the puck."
With this sweep, the Windsor Spitfires continue to build momentum, aiming to replicate the success of their 2010 championship team as they advance deeper into the playoffs.
