Ottawa Senators Owner Michael Andlauer Explores Purchase of Gatineau Olympiques
Michael Andlauer, the majority owner of the Ottawa Senators, is actively investigating the possibility of acquiring the Gatineau Olympiques, a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League franchise. This strategic move aims to deepen the Senators' connections within Quebec's vibrant hockey community, as confirmed by sources close to the negotiations.
Serious Discussions Underway
The Ottawa Citizen has verified that Andlauer is engaged in serious talks with the current ownership group of the Gatineau Olympiques regarding a potential purchase. These discussions were initially reported by respected broadcaster Nicolas St-Pierre, host of the Dans Le Vestiere podcast and former French radio play-by-play voice for the Senators.
A National Hockey League source, speaking anonymously, confirmed that while Andlauer is involved, he is not the sole party interested in the club. "It's a move that makes sense for Michael," the source noted, highlighting the logical expansion of his hockey portfolio.
Ownership Group Dynamics
The Olympiques are currently owned by a consortium of shareholders, including former Ottawa Senators winger Derick Brassard. Reports indicate that one shareholder, Michel Quensel, recently proposed buying a majority stake for $12.5 million, but this offer was rejected, potentially opening the door for Andlauer's involvement.
Francois Beaudry, chairman of the Olympiques board of directors, addressed the speculation during the team's season wrap-up press conference at the Centre Slush Puppie in Gatineau. "I don't have a comment. There are always discussions with potential owners or potential partners. As I said, there is nothing imminent," Beaudry stated. He added that while the structure remains unchanged for now, solutions for hockey operations are being discussed, and ownership changes in the off-season are not ruled out.
Andlauer's Junior Hockey Background
Andlauer brings extensive experience in junior hockey ownership to the table. He owned the Ontario Hockey League's Hamilton Bulldogs for a decade, relocating the team to Brantford in 2023 before selling it to the family of Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman in January 2025. Although unconfirmed, NHL circles suggest the Bulldogs were sold for approximately $12 million.
Historic Franchise with Strong Support
The Gatineau Olympiques are a historic and well-supported QMJHL franchise, with a legacy that includes ownership by NHL legend Wayne Gretzky from 1985 to 1992. The current ownership group assumed control in 2019 and expanded with additional partners in 2020. Beyond Andlauer, there is speculation that former New Jersey Devils star Martin Brodeur may also be part of a group interested in the Olympiques, indicating competitive interest in the club.
This potential acquisition represents a significant step for Andlauer in fostering cross-border hockey relationships and expanding his influence in Canadian junior hockey, aligning with the Senators' broader strategy to enhance their presence in Quebec.
