Senators Coach Travis Green Focuses On Ice Amid Social Media Noise
As the Ottawa Senators prepared for what many called their "biggest game of the season" against the Buffalo Sabres, much of the conversation centered on off-ice developments rather than on-ice strategy. Head coach Travis Green entered Thursday's media availability with a lighthearted remark about keeping it brief, but ended up speaking for nine minutes addressing the various distractions surrounding his team.
Quieting The External Noise
With eight games remaining in their season and battling for a playoff position, Green spent considerable time trying to quiet what he called the "noise" around his squad. "I'm excited," Green stated. "We've battled our asses off from November to get ourselves in this spot. If, back in November or December, you had said we'd be where we are now with eight games to go, we would have taken it."
The coach emphasized that while the team's position doesn't guarantee playoff entry, it does require maximum effort. "We have some injuries," Green acknowledged. "Yeah, we do, but we've never talked about it. We've never worried about it, and we're not going to do it now. We're going to worry about tonight, worry about Buffalo, worry about our teammates, not worry about white noise and the talk that's outside of our minds."
Defending Goaltender Linus Ullmark
One significant point of discussion involved goaltender Linus Ullmark, who was pulled after allowing five goals on fifteen shots during Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Florida Panthers. Green clarified his decision, explaining that he removed Ullmark from a difficult team situation rather than due to the goalie's individual performance.
"Easy, he's our guy," Green affirmed. "To be honest, the last game I pulled him, but I pulled him more because the team was so sh-tty. Not because of him." The coach also addressed why Ullmark didn't start against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Saturday's 4-2 road loss, citing the need for rest after a challenging season both on and off the ice.
"I pretty well stand by what I said. I want him to play every night. He's our No. 1 goalie," Green explained. "He's been playing well since he came back. But in saying that, everyone in the room understands that it's been a bit of a rough year for him. Since he's come back from his leave, he's played well. He needed a rest. As simple as that."
Injury Updates And Lineup Changes
The Senators face lineup challenges as they approach this critical stretch. Defenceman Carter Yakemchuk will be unavailable, prompting the team to recall Ottawa native Cameron Crotty from the American Hockey League's Belleville Senators. Meanwhile, blueliner Jake Sanderson continues recovering from a shoulder injury, with hopes he might return either Saturday against Minnesota or Sunday against Carolina.
Navigating Social Media Controversies
Beyond the immediate lineup concerns, Green must navigate social media controversies involving team captain Brady Tkachuk and his brother Matthew of the Florida Panthers. Their father Keith's recent appearance on The Wingmen Podcast generated significant online discussion that threatened to become a distraction during this crucial playoff push.
Green's message remained consistent throughout: focus on what happens on the ice rather than external chatter. With the Senators positioned just outside playoff contention and facing must-win scenarios, the coach's ability to maintain team concentration could prove decisive in their postseason aspirations.
