Saskatchewan Passes Tailgating Act for Riders Fans

Saskatchewan Government Passes Landmark Tailgating Legislation

The Government of Saskatchewan has officially passed The Tailgating Act, a significant legislative move that will transform game-day experiences for Saskatchewan Roughriders fans. The act, approved on Thursday, amends the Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act 1997 to permit controlled alcohol consumption in public spaces during designated events.

New Tailgating Opportunities for Football Enthusiasts

Under the new legislation, the Saskatchewan Roughriders organization will be authorized to sell tailgating spaces in the parking lot adjacent to Mosaic Stadium. These season-long passes will cost $500 each and provide fans with dedicated areas for pre-game celebrations. Each tailgating space will encompass two parking spots, ensuring sufficient room for vehicles and festive setups.

Warren Kaeding, the minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA), expressed enthusiasm about the development. "We know the Riders have been very active in promoting tailgating activities, and we're just so looking forward to game day and seeing how creative our Rider fans are going to be in supporting them," Kaeding told reporters after question period.

Comprehensive Planning and Safety Measures

The government has engaged in extensive consultations with multiple stakeholders to ensure the tailgating initiative proceeds safely and successfully. These consultations have included the Riders organization, REAL District, city officials, police and fire departments, SGI, and the Ministry of Health.

"We've got all ages that are going to be involved in this, so we want to make sure that everyone has the best of experience there," Kaeding emphasized, highlighting the comprehensive approach to planning.

Lottery System and Implementation Timeline

In anticipation of the legislation's passage, the Riders organization conducted a lottery exclusively for season ticket holders from February 23 to March 5. Winners of this lottery will be contacted in April to secure their tailgating spaces for the upcoming season. The exact number of available tailgating spaces has not yet been publicly announced.

The new tailgating regulations will allow participants to bring their own food and alcohol to consume within their designated areas. This development comes as the Roughriders prepare to open their CFL season with a home game against the B.C. Lions on June 13.

Historical Context and Fan Celebration

The legislation arrives following a period of heightened enthusiasm for Roughriders football, particularly after the team's victory at the 112th Grey Cup Championship in November 2025. Saskatchewan fans famously celebrated on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Albert Street in Regina after that championship win.

The Tailgating Act represents a formal recognition of the important role that fan traditions play in the sports culture of Saskatchewan. By creating structured, permitted spaces for tailgating activities, the government aims to enhance game-day experiences while maintaining appropriate safety and regulatory oversight.

This legislative change marks a significant development in Canadian football culture, establishing Saskatchewan as a pioneer in officially sanctioned tailgating experiences for CFL fans. The $500 season passes will provide dedicated supporters with enhanced opportunities to celebrate their team while fostering community spirit around Roughriders games.
