Roughriders Add Free Agents in CFL to Defend Championship

Saskatchewan Roughriders Strengthen Squad in CFL Free Agency Pursuit

As the Canadian Football League's free agency period commenced this week, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, fresh off their Grey Cup championship victory, have embarked on a strategic mission to reinforce their lineup. The defending champions entered the off-season with a significant number of pending free agents, setting the stage for crucial roster decisions that could impact their quest for a repeat title.

Retaining Core Talent and Addressing Departures

Before free agency officially opened, the Roughriders demonstrated their commitment to continuity by successfully re-signing 22 of their 44 pending free agents. This group includes several key starters who were instrumental in last season's championship run:

  • Quarterback Trevor Harris, whose leadership guided the offense
  • Running back A.J. Ouellette, a powerful presence in the backfield
  • Offensive linemen Jermarcus Hardrick and Jacob Brammer, providing protection up front
  • Receivers KeeSean Johnson, Samuel Emilus, and Kian Schaffer-Baker, offering diverse passing threats
  • Defensive backs Tevaughn Campbell, DaMarcus Fields, and Nelson Lokombo, anchoring the secondary
  • Defensive linemen Mike Rose and Caleb Sanders, strengthening the front seven

The team also navigated several departures, with defensive lineman Micah Johnson and running back Ka'Deem Carey announcing their retirements, while two additional players were released. These moves left 18 Roughriders players entering the free agent market when it officially opened on Tuesday.

Strategic Additions with Professional Experience

In the days leading up to free agency, Saskatchewan made preliminary moves by signing veteran CFL linebacker Josh Woods, an American player who could potentially assume the starting weakside linebacker role. Additionally, the team secured veteran American receiver and return specialist James Lethcher Jr., who may emerge as Saskatchewan's primary kick returner for the 2026 season.

When the free agent market officially opened, the Roughriders announced several notable acquisitions, including players with valuable NFL experience:

New Offensive Weapons

Freddie Swain, a 27-year-old receiver standing 6-foot-0 and weighing 199 pounds, brings 33 games of NFL experience to Saskatchewan. Originally drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Swain accumulated 38 receptions for 502 yards and six touchdowns during his tenure with Seattle from 2020-2021. His versatility extends to special teams, where he has served as a punt returner. Following his time with the Seahawks, Swain had stints with the Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles, and most recently, the Chicago Bears in 2024.

Juwann Winfree, a 29-year-old receiver selected by the Denver Broncos in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, adds another dimension to the Roughriders' receiving corps. Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 210 pounds, Winfree has appeared in 23 NFL games, recording nine catches for 75 yards. His professional journey includes time with the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, and Houston Texans following his rookie season in Denver.

Peny Boone, a 23-year-old running back measuring 6-foot-1 and 232 pounds, joins Saskatchewan after spending last season on the Toronto Argonauts' practice roster. Boone concluded his collegiate career at the University of Central Florida, following a productive stint at Toledo where he ranked eighth in the NCAA with an impressive 1,400 rushing yards.

Defensive Reinforcement

While not officially announced in the initial moments of free agency, reports indicate the Roughriders are poised to add veteran defensive end James Vaughters. The American defender spent the 2025 season with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after four productive years with the Calgary Stampeders. Vaughters' potential addition would further strengthen Saskatchewan's defensive front as they prepare to defend their championship.

The Roughriders' calculated approach to free agency reflects their determination to build upon last season's success. By blending retained veterans with new talent possessing professional experience, Saskatchewan appears positioned to mount a formidable defense of their Grey Cup title in the upcoming CFL season.
