Regina Pats Stand One Point Away from WHL Playoff Qualification
The Regina Pats are on the brink of clinching a Western Hockey League playoff berth, needing just one more standings point after a weekend of dramatic action. The team's pursuit of postseason hockey has intensified, with key performances and narrow results shaping their path forward.
Tabashniuk's Heroic Goaltending Nearly Secures Victory
In a crucial matchup on March 14, 2026, hometown goalie Taylor Tabashniuk delivered a spectacular 52-save performance against the powerful Prince Albert Raiders at Regina's Brandt Centre. Despite his efforts, the Pats fell 2-1 in a shootout after regulation and overtime ended tied. The game showcased Tabashniuk's resilience and nearly propelled his team into the playoffs.
"We're pretty motivated to get our spot," said Pats defender Kolten Bridgeman, a four-year veteran who turned 19 in October. "Getting this experience in the playoffs is gonna be huge for us. It will be really special when we make it." Bridgeman emphasized the team's desire for postseason exposure and development.
Weekend Results and Playoff Implications
The Pats entered Sunday's game against the Moose Jaw Warriors with a chance to secure their playoff spot, needing only one point against a ninth-place team facing elimination. However, Moose Jaw won 5-2, delaying Regina's clinching moment.
Regina now faces a critical final stretch of regular-season games:
- Tuesday in Prince Albert
- Friday against the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings
- Saturday in Brandon for the regular-season finale
Currently seventh in the WHL's East Conference with a record of 25-31-7-2, the Pats are chasing the eighth-place Red Deer Rebels (25-34-4-2) for the final playoff position. Prince Albert (49-10-5-1) and the Medicine Hat Tigers (48-10-5-3) are tied atop the conference standings.
Team Focus and Injury Challenges
Pats head coach Brad Herauf stressed the importance of internal focus amid the playoff race. "We've really just been focused on ourselves," Herauf said. "With a young group I think that's helped us a lot. If we take care of ourselves and do what we feel we're capable of doing, then things should fall in our favour."
The team has faced significant injury challenges, scratching seven regulars in Saturday's game against Prince Albert. Defenders Jonas Kohn, Dayton Deschamps, and Ephram McNutt, along with forwards Keets Fawcett, Liam Pue, Maddox Schultz, and Jace Egland, were sidelined. Fifteen-year-old prospects Owen Sejna and Cruz Nicolay were added to the lineup, with most players reactivated for Sunday's contest.
"We've got guys running on fumes right now," Herauf noted after Saturday's high-tempo game. "We've got some guys in concussion protocol, so you never know how that's gonna go." Despite these hurdles, the coach expressed optimism about the team's future and fan support.
The Pats' late push against Prince Albert saw Zach Lansard score to give Regina a 1-0 lead, but Max Heise equalized for the Raiders with just 51 seconds remaining. After overtime, Prince Albert outshot the Pats 53-17 and won the shootout 2-0, highlighting the defensive effort required from Tabashniuk and his teammates.
As the regular season winds down, the Regina Pats remain determined to secure their playoff berth and gain valuable postseason experience for their developing roster.
