Regina Pats Leadership Emphasizes Stability Following Turbulent WHL Campaign
Dale Derkatch maintained his composure throughout an erratic regular season, his inaugural year as general manager of the Regina Pats in the Western Hockey League. As the offseason commences, Derkatch is methodically evaluating the team's players and coaching staff, seeking to build a foundation of consistency after a spirited yet anticipated first-round playoff exit against the formidable Medicine Hat Tigers.
Building a Foundation for Long-Term Success
"When I assumed this role, my vision was to establish an environment characterized by stability, where both players and coaches feel secure and supported," stated Derkatch, who was promoted to general manager in June 2025. "Examining successful franchises reveals a common thread: they retain their core staff and players over extended periods. That is precisely the model I intend to implement here, especially after witnessing the significant roster turnover and instability of the past two seasons."
Under the previous general manager, Alan Millar, who departed to rejoin Hockey Canada, the Pats underwent a comprehensive rebuild. Millar executed numerous trades, exchanging virtually every marketable player for future draft selections, fundamentally reshaping the team's composition.
A Calmer Rookie Season for Derkatch
In contrast, Derkatch's debut season was markedly more tranquil. He orchestrated seven transactions, with the most notable being the trade of forward Julien Maze, the team's leading scorer in December, who had requested a transfer. Despite the season's challenges, including a six-game losing streak in October, a winless six-game road trip through the U.S. Division in November, and a five-game winless skid to conclude the regular season, the Pats demonstrated resilience.
The team secured six victories in nine February games and clinched its first playoff berth since the 2022-23 season, maintaining its position despite the annual November road trip necessitated by the Canadian Western Agribition occupying the Brandt Centre.
Coaching Staff Reflects on Adversity and Growth
Head coach Brad Herauf, whose position was scrutinized during the season's tumult, acknowledged the valuable lessons learned. "This experience has profoundly tested my character and focus," Herauf remarked. "While winning undoubtedly facilitates progress, adversity truly reveals one's mettle. We navigated a rebuild; expectations must align with that reality. Observing our performance post-Christmas, we ranked in the upper half of our conference, which is a significant achievement."
Herauf emphasized the strategic approach taken, noting, "The most critical decision by Dale was preserving our draft capital for the future. We did not compromise long-term prospects for short-term gains, which is essential for sustainable growth."
The Regina Pats' leadership is now focused on fostering an atmosphere of continuity and development, aiming to transform the promising young squad into a consistently competitive force in the WHL.
