Regina Pat Canadians Dominate Hockey Playoffs with Strategic Lineup Flexibility
The high-scoring Regina Pat Canadians are powering through the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League playoffs with remarkable consistency, regardless of whether offensive stars Maddox Schultz and Liam Pue are in the lineup. This adaptability is fueling their quest for back-to-back Telus Cup championships, demonstrating the team's depth and resilience.
Team Unity and Depth Drive Success
In a recent 7-2 playoff victory that eliminated the Estevan Bears at the Co-Operators Centre, defender Ryker Doka emphasized the team's cohesive spirit. "It helps when Schultz and Pue are here because they really make an impact," Doka said after scoring one of Regina's goals. "Our team is a close group and we bring it together whether they're here or not; we'll work our asses off." This mindset has been crucial as the Pat C's, who topped the SMAAAHL regular-season standings for a second consecutive year, swept Estevan in their best-of-five semifinal to advance to the championship series.
Coaching Philosophy Embraces Challenges
Head coach Ryan Hodgins highlighted the importance of perseverance in the playoff grind. "There are gonna be peaks and valleys," Hodgins noted, referencing a game where his team surrendered the opening goal before rallying with seven straight tallies. "You have to embrace the grind. You're gonna have owwies and bumps and bruises and it's a grind, but whoever embraces it and enjoys it has the best chance." This approach has paid off, with the Pat Canadians winning three straight games in their opening series against the Saskatoon Contacts before their semifinal success.
Star Players Balancing Multiple Commitments
Schultz and Pue, both top picks in the 2026 WHL draft, bring elite talent to the Pat Canadians when available. Schultz, named the outstanding player in last year's national championship, was drafted first overall by his hometown Regina Pats, while Pue, from British Columbia, was selected third overall. Due to their 2010 birth years, they were limited to 41 regular-season games with the Pats, allowing them to contribute significantly to the Pat Canadians with 21 regular-season games each. Schultz recorded 30 goals and 30 assists, and Pue added 16 goals and 32 assists. In the playoffs, Pue has six points in five games, and Schultz has three points in two contests.
Strategic Rest and Playoff Preparation
Neither Schultz nor Pue played in Saturday's game against Estevan, as they were also involved with the Regina Pats' efforts to clinch a WHL playoff berth. The Pats rested seven regulars in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Prince Albert Raiders, with former Pat C's goalie Taylor Tabashniuk making 53 saves in the defeat. Pats head coach Brad Herauf explained the cautious approach, "making sure the youngsters were fresh heading into the WHL playoffs." Most of those players returned for a subsequent 5-2 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors, as Regina seeks its first postseason berth since 2022.
The Regina Pat Canadians' ability to thrive with or without their star players underscores their championship pedigree and strategic depth, positioning them as strong contenders for another Telus Cup title.
