Ottawa Redblacks Prepare for Strategic CFL Free Agency Moves
The Ottawa Redblacks are entering a critical phase of their offseason reconstruction as they prepare for the upcoming CFL free agency period. With the team finishing at the bottom of the league standings last season, new leadership is determined to address multiple roster deficiencies through strategic acquisitions.
New Leadership at the Helm
The rebuilding effort is being spearheaded by the Redblacks' new coaching and management team. Head coach and general manager Ryan Dinwiddie, working alongside Shawn Burke who has been elevated to vice president of football operations, are collaborating for the first time to reshape the team's roster. This partnership marks a significant shift in the organization's approach to team construction following a disappointing 2025 campaign.
Free Agency Timeline and Strategy
While the official CFL free-agent market opens on February 10th, the crucial "legal tampering" period begins this Sunday. By Wednesday, most top-tier players are expected to have reached agreements that will be formally announced the following Tuesday. The Redblacks have identified this period as essential for addressing their roster needs.
The team faces significant work ahead, with 21 players currently eligible to test free agency waters. Following Friday's release of veteran linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox, only a small number of these players are expected to return, leaving multiple positions that require attention.
Key Departure and Replacement Strategy
The release of Jovan Santos-Knox represents a significant change for the Redblacks defense. The 31-year-old linebacker had been a team leader during his three seasons in Ottawa, contributing both on and off the field. In a statement, Shawn Burke expressed the organization's respect for Santos-Knox, noting that "a few sentences could not put into words what he has meant to our football club both on and off the field."
Santos-Knox became expendable following last month's trade acquisition of Nyles Morgan from the Edmonton Elks. Both players occupy the middle linebacker position, with Morgan offering a younger and presumably more cost-effective option at 29 years old. This move allows Santos-Knox to get an early start on free agency while providing the Redblacks with financial flexibility.
Quarterback Situation Remains Priority
The most glaring need for the Redblacks remains at the quarterback position, where they seek competition for starter Dru Brown. Last year's backup, Dustin Crum, could potentially return, though he may explore opportunities elsewhere that offer either a starting role or increased compensation.
Crum has proven himself as an exceptional runner, leading the team in touchdowns with 11 and ranking second in rushing yards with 429 last season. His experience, toughness, and durability make him valuable insurance for Brown, who has faced health challenges. The 27-year-old has dressed for all but one game and started 20 contests during his three seasons in Ottawa.
Additionally, the Redblacks have shown interest in Taylor Powell, a 27-year-old quarterback who has spent the past three seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. This indicates the team's commitment to creating competitive depth at the quarterback position.
Building from the Basement
The Redblacks' approach to free agency reflects their determination to climb from last year's CFL basement finish. With new leadership, strategic player movements already underway, and multiple roster holes to address, the upcoming free agency period represents a crucial opportunity for the organization to reshape its competitive outlook for the 2026 season.
