Prince Albert Raiders Seize 2-0 Series Lead with Gritty Victory Over Saskatoon Blades
The Saskatoon Blades face a daunting challenge as they return home for Games 3 and 4 of their Western Hockey League playoff series against the Prince Albert Raiders. The top-seeded Eastern Division squad has built a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven second-round matchup, putting them halfway toward series victory.
Raiders Showcase Versatility in Back-to-Back Wins
In Game 1 on Friday, the Raiders demonstrated their offensive prowess with a dominant 6-1 victory fueled by speed and finesse on home ice at the Art Hauser Centre. The following night in Game 2, they displayed a different dimension of their game—winning through sheer determination and defensive discipline in a hard-fought 3-0 shutout.
"I think that we're trying to be a little bit too cute," Blades coach Dan DaSilva admitted following Saturday's loss. "Now, you've got to give them credit. They're doing a good job getting in lanes. I think that our shot attempts were better tonight, but we've got to do a better job hitting the net, getting it past the shot blocker, and having more of a shot mentality."
Game 2 Breakdown: Raiders Capitalize on Opportunities
After a scoreless first period where the Raiders outshot the Blades 11-3 but couldn't solve Saskatoon goaltender Evan Gardner, the game remained deadlocked through much of the second frame. The breakthrough came midway through the period when P.A.'s Owen Corkish crashed the net and banged in a rebound to give his team a lead they would never surrender.
Jonah Sivertson doubled the advantage before the second intermission, and Matyas Man added an insurance marker in the third period to seal the 3-0 victory. The Raiders' defensive effort was equally impressive, with goaltender Michael Orsulak stopping all 15 shots he faced for the shutout.
"We played simple and we played hard," said game-winning goal scorer Owen Corkish. "We did the right things that we needed to do and it came out in the end."
Blades Seek Solutions as Series Shifts to Saskatoon
Despite the loss, Blades coach DaSilva found some positives in his team's performance compared to Friday's lopsided defeat. Following the Game 1 loss, the coaching staff emphasized simplification—urging players to compete harder, move faster, and adopt a more direct "north-south" approach.
"We were right there over halfway through the second period, 0-0," DaSilva noted. "We take a chance on a rush, we don't execute, and they come back and put it in the back of our net. It was a better effort from our group, for sure. It is going to be a tall task. We know that, but I think that was a step in the right direction."
Blades goaltender Evan Gardner delivered a strong performance despite the loss, making 34 saves including 29 through the first two periods to keep his team competitive. However, the Blades' offensive struggles continued as they failed to capitalize on their opportunities.
"When you're not scoring goals, not getting any offence, you've definitely got to simplify that area, too, and start getting some more pucks on net and get a couple greasy ones," DaSilva added. "That's something we'll address for sure."
Looking Ahead: Critical Games in Saskatoon
The series now shifts to Saskatoon for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday at SaskTel Centre. The Blades will need to solve the Raiders' defensive structure and generate more consistent offensive pressure if they hope to climb back into the series. Meanwhile, the Raiders will look to maintain their disciplined approach and potentially take a stranglehold on the matchup with road victories.
With the Prince Albert Raiders demonstrating they can win games through both offensive firepower and defensive grit, the Saskatoon Blades face the difficult task of finding answers against a versatile opponent that has shown few weaknesses through the first two contests.
