Edmonton Oilers Prospect Josh Samanski's Journey from Bakersfield to NHL Success
To describe Josh Samanski's inaugural professional hockey season in North America as merely "up and down" would be a significant understatement. In reality, the 23-year-old forward from Erding, Germany, has experienced a resounding success story, marked by rapid development and notable achievements on both domestic and international stages.
From Bakersfield to the Big League
The term "up and down" more accurately refers to Samanski's frequent transitions between the Edmonton Oilers and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. Since making his NHL debut on January 26, 2026, against the Anaheim Ducks, Samanski has recorded two assists across six games with the Oilers. These call-ups highlight his growing role within the organization and his ability to compete at hockey's highest level.
Stan Bowman, Oilers General Manager, emphasized the crucial role of Bakersfield in Samanski's development: "Josh has had a great year when you think of how far he's come. A year ago, he's playing in the German league, and then he comes to North America, plays pro, goes to the Olympics, plays NHL games. He's come a long way. But he's come that way through, I think, you've got to credit our group in Bakersfield. They've done a great job with him, the coaching staff and the development staff working with him. So, a lot of that has come through their hard work and his ability to play."
International Experience and Olympic Highlights
Samanski's season has been further distinguished by significant international competition. During the Milano Cortina Olympic Winter Games, he played alongside fellow German and Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl, contributing one goal and one assist in five games as Team Germany advanced to the quarter-finals.
Draisaitl praised his teammate's performance: "He was good, he had a good tournament. He played well. I think it was a great experience for him to be able to play a big role in playing against the elite of the elite. I think it was a growing experience for him and obviously very useful."
This Olympic appearance builds upon an already impressive international resume that includes:
- Participation in the World Junior Championships in both 2021 and 2022
- Competition in the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships
- Four previous seasons with the Straubing Tigers in Germany's premier professional league
Contract Signing and Future Prospects
Last spring, the undrafted 6-foot-2 forward secured a two-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers worth $1.95 million, signaling the organization's confidence in his potential. Since then, Samanski has demonstrated consistent growth, recently being called up post-Olympics and dressing for two of three Oilers games.
His journey from European leagues to North American professional hockey represents a testament to both personal dedication and effective organizational development systems. As Samanski continues to balance time between Bakersfield and Edmonton, his trajectory suggests a promising future in the NHL, with each appearance adding valuable experience to his expanding skill set.
