Playoff Surge After Injury-Plagued Season
Kapanen, who suffered a left knee injury in October against the Detroit Red Wings, missed significant time and finished the regular season with 17 points in 41 games. However, he found his stride in the playoffs, scoring four goals in six games against the Anaheim Ducks, leading the Oilers in that category and tying for third in points with six, alongside Connor McDavid and Vasily Podkolzin.
Injury Setbacks and Recovery
The injury occurred just six games into the season, and Kapanen returned at midseason only to reaggravate it in January against the St. Louis Blues, missing five more games. Despite the setbacks, he credited the rehab time for allowing him to rest and peak during the playoffs.
"This year, I felt like I played some pretty good hockey," Kapanen said. "One thing I tried to put emphasis on is just being consistent, and I felt like I was doing that for pretty much the whole season."
Free Agency and Desire to Stay
Set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, Kapanen expressed a strong desire to remain with the Oilers. He noted that Edmonton feels like home, especially since his son was born there. "If it was up to me, I'd love to come back but there are a lot of things that kind of go into it," he said. "And then hopefully the talks work out and I come back."
Kapanen originally joined the Oilers off waivers from the St. Louis Blues in November 2024 and played a key role in last year's run to the Stanley Cup Final, including an overtime winner against the Vegas Golden Knights. He signed a $1.3 million contract extension to return this season.

The Oilers were eliminated in the first round by the Ducks, a disappointing end after last year's deep playoff run. Kapanen's playoff production, despite the early exit, highlights his value as a depth scorer.
