The Edmonton Oilers faced a critical juncture in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series against the Anaheim Ducks. They could either adapt to the Ducks' high-speed game or impose their own defensive style. The final score of 7-4, coupled with 40 shots against, clearly indicated which path they took.
First Period Domination by Ducks
The Ducks overwhelmed the Oilers in the first period, outshooting them 20-7. Goaltender Connor Ingram kept Edmonton in the game, preventing a blowout. Despite being outplayed, the Oilers escaped the first period trailing only 2-1.
Second Period Recovery
Edmonton rallied in the second period, taking a 3-2 lead. Kasperi Kapanen scored his third goal of the series, while Connor McDavid, Evan Bouchard, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins recorded their first points of the series on the go-ahead goal.
Third Period Collapse
The Oilers' defensive frailties were exposed in the third period. Bouchard had a particularly difficult night, making three critical errors that led to three unanswered goals. He left Alex Killorn alone at the back door for an easy rebound, then had a slap pass intercepted leading to a two-on-one, and finally missed a simple pass that resulted in another two-on-one. These mistakes turned a 3-3 tie into a 6-3 deficit.
Zach Hyman commented, “Any time you let in seven, and it’s not a goalie problem, it’s defending better, you’re not going to win. We didn’t give ourselves a chance with the amount of goals we gave up.”
Series Outlook
The Oilers now trail 2-1 in the series, needing to win three of the next four games. The Ducks have demonstrated superior speed, skill, and composure, leaving Edmonton with a steep challenge. Kapanen added, “We have to be responsible with the puck. Those two goals they scored in the third period kind of took a little wind out of our sails. It’s disappointing because I truly feel we kind of gave them this win.”
