Top NHL Draft Prospect Carson Carels Injured in WHL Playoffs, Misses Game 2

Prince George Cougars defenceman Carson Carels, who is projected as a top-five selection in June's NHL Draft, suffered an injury during Game 1 of the WHL playoffs on Friday against the Spokane Chiefs. The 17-year-old left the game after an awkward collision that propelled him face-first into the boards and did not dress for Game 2 on Saturday.

Playoff Series Status and Injury Details

The No. 3 seeded Cougars, with a regular season record of 44-22-2-0, currently lead the best-of-seven opening round series 2-0 against the No. 6 seeded Chiefs (36-30-2-0). The series now shifts to Spokane for Game 3 on Monday. The Cougars have listed Carels as day-to-day, although teams are typically cautious about disclosing injury details during the playoffs.

The incident occurred in the waning moments of the first period on Friday when Carels went shoulder-to-shoulder with Chiefs forward Brodie Gillespie near the side boards just outside the Spokane blue line. According to reports from the Prince George Citizen's Ted Clarke, Carels remained down on the ice for several seconds before skating back to the Cougars' bench. He appeared wobbly on his feet as he walked to the dressing room, dropping to one knee at one point to gather his senses.

Gillespie received a double minor penalty for boarding on the play.

Carels' Impressive Season and Draft Projections

The 6-foot-1, 202-pound left-shot defenceman had an outstanding regular season with the Cougars, recording 20 goals and 73 points in 58 games. His performance has made him one of the most talked-about prospects heading into the NHL Draft.

TSN analyst Craig Button ranked Carels at No. 2 in his latest draft rankings published on March 24, behind only Penn State winger Gavin McKenna. In his assessment, Button compared Carels to Detroit Red Wings legend Nicklas Lidstrom, noting that while "there's no way anybody's ever going to be Nick Lidstrom," Carels demonstrates similar elements in his game including "the big minutes, the hard minutes, the offensive and defensive play and the timely play."

Other draft rankings vary slightly, with Elite Prospects projecting Carels at No. 5, while Sportsnet analysts Sam Cosentino and Jason Bukala rank him at No. 7 and No. 8 respectively.

Vancouver Canucks' Scouting Interest

Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin was among those keeping a close eye on Carels' development. Allvin attended a game at the Langley Events Centre on January 18 to watch Carels and the Cougars face off against the Vancouver Giants. Prince George won that contest 5-1.

The injury to such a high-profile prospect during the crucial playoff period adds uncertainty to his draft stock and immediate future. As the WHL playoffs continue, all eyes will be on Carels' recovery timeline and how it might affect his position in the upcoming NHL Draft.
