Matthews: Hockey, Not Politics, on Mind for Olympics

Auston Matthews Prioritizes Hockey Over Politics in Olympic Preparation

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is setting his sights squarely on the ice as he prepares for his debut at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. In a recent media availability, Matthews made it clear that his sole objective is to help Team USA capture the gold medal, steering clear of any political distractions surrounding the international tournament.

Matthews Dismisses Political Concerns

When questioned about the "politics of the tournament," particularly in light of the sometimes tense relations between Canada and the United States, Matthews offered a straightforward response. "I don’t really pay attention to that stuff much," he stated, speaking from his stall at the Ford Performance Centre after a practice session. "I think you’re kind of aware of it. There’s only so much you can control. My focus is on hockey and this team, and when we go to the Olympics, my focus will be on Team USA and that team."

Excitement Builds for NHL's Olympic Return

The upcoming games mark a significant milestone, as National Hockey League players will participate in the Olympics for the first time since 2014. That year, Canada secured its second consecutive gold medal in Sochi, Russia. Matthews expressed enthusiasm about this long-awaited opportunity, highlighting the pride and honor associated with representing one's country on such a global stage.

"It means a lot (to Matthews’ generation)," he remarked. "There’s a lot of excitement. There’s a lot of pride and honour that goes into representing your country. It has been a couple now that we have not been able to go to, so the excitement ramps up for it just because it has been so long."

Team USA Among Gold Medal Contenders

Following a loss to Canada in the championship game of the 4 Nations Face-Off, the United States is widely regarded as one of the top contenders for gold in Milan, alongside Canada and Sweden. Matthews conveyed confidence in his team's capabilities, emphasizing their readiness to compete at the highest level.

"I think we feel like we’re up there and we should be competing for gold," he asserted. "You want to be the best country in the world and this is a great opportunity. It has been a long time coming for NHL players to go there and represent."

Matthews' unwavering dedication to hockey underscores his commitment to excellence as he gears up for this prestigious event, putting team success above all else.
