The Toronto Maple Leafs are continuing their late-season roster evaluations by recalling another player from their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Ahead of Thursday night's game against the Anaheim Ducks, the team has promoted physical winger Michael Pezzetta, a local product, to the NHL squad.
Pezzetta's Journey and Challenges
Michael Pezzetta, a 6-foot-1, 223-pound forward, has had a tumultuous season. With 10 points in 37 NHL games, he had aimed to secure a spot on the Maple Leafs during training camp or earn an earlier recall. However, injuries have disrupted his progress, making for a bumpy return after playing 200 games for the Montreal Canadiens.
In an interview with the Toronto Sun last month, Pezzetta expressed his frustrations. "It has definitely been up and down," he said. "When I'm playing, I'm playing good hockey. But getting hurt a couple times in practice is definitely frustrating, and missing time because of that. It feels like whenever I get in a rhythm, something silly happens, and I'm missing some games here and there. Overall, it's part of the game and you just have to deal with it."
Contract and Role with the Leafs
Pezzetta signed a two-year contract last summer with an average annual value of $812,500 US. He brings valuable on-ice experience, particularly as an enforcer, ranking second on the Marlies with 52 penalty minutes. At 27 years old, he now gets an opportunity with a Maple Leafs team that has struggled with physicality and intensity, partly due to their low standing in the NHL.
During Thursday morning's skate, Pezzetta was lined up with recent call-up Jacob Quillan and Calle Jarnkrok, indicating he may see immediate action. Off the ice, he has been enjoying familiar surroundings in Toronto, including Sunday dinners with his parents when his schedule allows.
Looking Ahead
Pezzetta remains determined to prove his worth in the NHL. "I want to play in the NHL, I know I can play in the NHL. I spent the last four seasons in the NHL," he stated. "It's just doing everything I can to show that I can still play there, and if an opportunity comes, I'll be ready for it."
This recall is part of a broader trend for the Maple Leafs, who are giving their secondary roster players a look in the final weeks of the season. As the team assesses its options, Pezzetta's physical presence and experience could provide a much-needed spark.
