Manny Malhotra Balances Fatherhood and Coaching with Son Caleb as NHL Draft Prospect
Manny Malhotra Balances Dad and Coach Roles with Son Caleb

New Vancouver Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra has a simple rule at home: he is first and foremost a father, not a coach. This distinction is crucial as his son, Caleb Malhotra, is a top prospect in the upcoming NHL draft.

Balancing Roles

Speaking after his introduction as the 23rd coach in Canucks history, Malhotra explained the family's approach. "We've had a very clear understanding in my household that first and foremost I'm dad, who also happens to be a professional hockey coach," he said. "When we are talking about hockey, there's a decision for my kids, if they want to talk to dad or coach."

This boundary has been in place for about six years and has helped maintain a healthy family dynamic. Caleb, an 18-year-old two-way center, played for the Brantford Bulldogs in the OHL after a stint with Chilliwack in the BCHL. After games, he calls home but often seeks the coach's perspective rather than his father's.

Draft Implications

The Canucks hold the third overall pick in the draft, and Caleb is a strong candidate. Malhotra emphasized he would treat his son like any other player. "I would treat him just as any other player, and I know people would say, well, you can't because it's your son, and I do understand the challenges there," he said.

He added, "When Caleb brings up hockey to me, he always wants to talk to coach. I've seen his growth over the last couple years... I think he would have the wherewithal and the ability to separate the two at the next level."

Malhotra's approach highlights the delicate balance between professional duties and family life, especially as the draft approaches.
