Impact on Scholarship Applications
Applications for the Black Girl Hockey Club, a non-profit organization that provides scholarship assistance, are now overwhelmingly filled with references to Edwards. Taylor Green, the communications director and board member for the club, shared insights with Nancy Armour of USA Today. "They say, 'Oh, I want to make it to Division I, and I see people like Laila have, and that inspires me.' Or, 'I'm the only girl or girl of color on my team, but I see Laila, and that helps me keep going.' Just adorable, heartwarming things," Green explained. "Things that let you know her impact is really being felt, on and off the ice."
Performance at the Winter Olympics
During the Milan Cortina Games, Edwards demonstrated her skill on the ice, contributing to the top-ranked American team's advancement into the quarterfinals against host Italy. She recorded a goal and three assists, totaling four points, which placed her second among defenders in the tournament. This performance further solidified her status as a key player and role model.
