Kimberley Jordan launches all-girls baseball league in Calgary

Kimberley Jordan, a volunteer and official girls' advocate for District 3 Baseball, is spearheading the launch of the D3 Wild Roses All-Girls Baseball League. This new initiative is designed to create more opportunities for girls to play, grow, and thrive in baseball.

Addressing Underrepresentation

"Girls are still incredibly underrepresented in baseball," Jordan said. "We have women's hockey, basketball and soccer leagues. It's time baseball creates those same opportunities and pathways for girls, too." The league aims to provide a dedicated space for female players, from t-ball through majors, with plans to expand into junior and senior levels.

Girls with Game Event

The momentum behind the initiative is building through the annual Girls with Game event, scheduled for May 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Confederation Park senior diamonds. This event will feature female baseball players from across Alberta, including athletes who have represented Team Alberta and Baseball Canada, along with special guest Sydney Barry of Fort McMurray, a draft pick of the Los Angeles franchise in the Women's Pro Baseball League.

"The older girls come to Girls with Game to show the younger girls there's a place for them in baseball," Jordan explained. "Sydney has been an incredible advocate and role model for our program."

Building Confidence and Community

The Girls with Game initiative was launched by the Centennial Little League with camps and events designed to introduce more girls to baseball and encourage them to stay involved. While participation has grown, many leagues still struggle to field enough girls for full teams, often leaving female players as the only girl or one of very few on a boys' roster.

Jordan says the divide between girls' and boys' teams at younger ages has little to do with athletic ability and far more to do with confidence, culture, and belonging. Many girls are fully capable of competing alongside boys, but constantly being the lone female player can create feelings of isolation and added pressure to prove they belong.

"An all-girls environment allows girls to lead, take risks, build friendships and develop confidence surrounded by teammates who share similar experiences," Jordan added.

Empowering Female Leadership

The D3 Wild Roses All-Girls Baseball League will feature an entirely female coaching staff, and organizers are hoping to offer umpire training opportunities for women as well. "This is about growing the game for girls at every level from players and coaches to umpires and future leaders in the sport," Jordan said.

The event will also serve as the official launch of the league, which plans to offer divisions from t-ball through majors, with hopes of eventually expanding into junior and senior levels. Jordan believes the impact of sport reaches far beyond the baseball diamond, fostering life skills and community.
