Jarry Gets the Start, Hyman a Question Mark for Edmonton Oilers Tonight
The Edmonton Oilers are set to face the Chicago Blackhawks tonight, aiming to extend their winning streak to five games. Goaltender Tristan Jarry will start in net, while forward Zach Hyman's participation remains uncertain as a game-time decision.
Goaltending Rotation Continues
After Connor Ingram's impressive run of three consecutive victories, allowing only five goals on 89 shots with a .943 save percentage and a shutout against the Seattle Kraken, the Oilers are turning to Jarry. The former Pittsburgh Penguin has faced challenges since joining Edmonton but has shown recent improvement, winning two of his last three starts. His most recent performance was a 5-2 victory over Utah, which sparked the team's current winning streak.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch praised Jarry's recent form, stating, "I thought he was very solid, two goals against and made some big saves when we needed them. He's had a lot of time to work on his game and re-set, and in the last couple of practices he's looked pretty good."
Hyman's Status in Doubt
On the offensive front, Zach Hyman did not practice with the team on Wednesday and skipped the optional morning skate. The Oilers have not disclosed details about his condition, only confirming that his availability will be determined closer to game time. This uncertainty adds a layer of intrigue to the lineup as Edmonton seeks to maintain its momentum.
Frederic Returns from Injury
In more positive news, forward Trent Frederic is set to return after missing the last five games due to an undisclosed injury. Frederic has struggled this season, recording only three points in the first 54 games, but showed signs of improvement before his latest setback, with two goals and one assist in his last ten appearances. He expressed enthusiasm about rejoining the team, emphasizing the need to hit the ground running.
"I'm excited to get playing again," Frederic said. "It's not ideal to take a break, I thought I was playing well, but we did a lot of good stuff and I think I'm in better shape than I was before. The team is playing better, too. I have to hit the ground running, just like then, going full speed. There's no time to wait around and hang out. You can't really ease your way into these games."
Dickinson Faces Former Team
Adding to the storyline, Oilers centre Jason Dickinson will face his former team, the Chicago Blackhawks, for the first time since being traded to Edmonton. Part of his role will involve containing former teammate Connor Bedard, a dynamic player known for his offensive prowess.
Dickinson acknowledged the unique challenge, saying, "I'm sure I'll be victim to a few chirps. It's a weird thing to be a part of, but it will be a lot of fun to go out there and compete against them." He added that his experience practicing against Bedard has given him insights into how to approach the matchup, though he emphasized Bedard's skill in finding weaknesses.
"I've gone up against him plenty in practice," Dickinson noted. "Lots of five-on-five and PK time head-to-head in practice. He's had the better of me a few times and I've had the better of him. There are definitely ways to get to him and I've worked on them, but he is also a very dynamic player who recognizes where I go and what I do and how to find the weak spots. He's not an easy matchup by any means."
As the Oilers prepare for tonight's game, the combination of Jarry's start, Hyman's uncertain status, Frederic's return, and Dickinson's reunion with his old team sets the stage for an engaging NHL matchup.
