Hockey Huskies' Season Concludes with Overtime Heartbreak at U Sports Nationals
The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's hockey team, seeded first and reigning as back-to-back Canada West champions, experienced a devastating conclusion to their season on Thursday. Their pursuit of a U Sports national title was abruptly halted by a 4-3 overtime defeat against the eighth-seeded host team, Saint Mary's University, in the University Cup national championship quarterfinals held in Halifax.
Coach Reflects on a Tough Loss After a Strong Season
"Obviously tough right now for our group," stated head coach Brandin Cote in a post-game news release. He acknowledged the team's elevated expectations entering the tournament but emphasized pride in their overall performance. "We had, I guess, higher expectations coming in here, but you know, we've had a great year and I'm proud of our guys."
Cote credited the Saint Mary's Huskies for executing "a real hard game" and noted the unpredictable nature of overtime hockey. He reflected on the game's flow, saying, "We had our chances, we had our opportunities, a couple breakaways, couple point-blankers. Their goaltender played well. Our goaltender played well. They had some good chances, and that's just the way it goes sometimes."
A Valiant Comeback Effort Falls Just Short
The game presented a significant challenge early on, with the Huskies trailing 3-0 late in the second period. However, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience, mounting a fierce comeback to tie the game in the final minutes of regulation.
The scoring surge was ignited by U Sports rookie of the year forward Connor Roulette, who netted his sixth playoff goal with just four minutes remaining in the second period to put the Huskies on the board. Roulette struck again a mere fifteen seconds into the third period, narrowing the deficit to 3-2.
Both teams had power play opportunities in the tense final stretch, but neither could capitalize until the closing minutes. Following a tripping penalty against Saint Mary's, the Huskies executed a precise play just over forty seconds into the man advantage. Chantz Petruic located Liam Keeler alone in front of the net, and Keeler delivered the equalizer to force overtime.
Overtime Seals the Fate for the Top Seed
The hard-fought comeback, however, was ultimately undone in the extra period. With four minutes left in overtime, Saint Mary's defenceman Ethan Ritchie managed to redirect a shot past Huskies goaltender Nolan Maier, securing the victory and ending Saskatchewan's championship run.
Connor Roulette, who was named the Huskies' player of the game, offered perspective on the tournament's competitive nature. "Coming into a tournament like this, they give you the No. 1 seed, but that means nothing when you're in a tournament with the eight best teams left in Canada," he remarked. Expressing gratitude, he added, "I just can't thank the coaches and our vets enough. Just a really fun year, and it just sucks that it got cut short."
With this result, the Saint Mary's Huskies advance to face the fourth-seeded Windsor Lancers in the U Sports national championship semifinals scheduled for Saturday. For the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, a season marked by conference success concludes with the sting of a sudden and dramatic national tournament exit.
