Calgary Hitmen's Eric Tu Enters WHL Playoffs with Confidence After Breakout Season

The Calgary Hitmen are heading into the Western Hockey League playoffs with a confident young goaltender leading the charge. Eric Tu, a 19-year-old netminder from White Rock, British Columbia, has transformed into a key player for the team during the 2025-26 season, establishing himself as one of the WHL's top performers between the pipes.

A Pro-Style Goalie with Incredible Athleticism

Tu has been described by hockey executives as a "prototypical new pro-style goalie with incredible athleticism." This season, he has lived up to that billing, ranking among WHL leaders in both goals-against average and wins. His emergence as the team's number one goaltender came after the Hitmen traded veteran goalie Anders Miller last October, a move that opened the door for Tu to showcase his talents.

"I thought it was just an awesome opportunity for me," Tu said in the days leading up to the playoffs. "I get to start more games and get to showcase myself. And I've tried to take advantage of that opportunity just by working hard and enjoying every moment of it."

From Limited Experience to Playoff Starter

Before this breakout season, Tu had appeared in just 16 WHL games during the 2024-25 campaign, posting a 3.50 goals-against average and .877 save percentage. The 6-foot-3, 198-pound goaltender was originally selected by the Hitmen in the second round (31st overall) of the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft after an impressive 2022-23 season with St. George's School U15 Prep squad in Vancouver, where he recorded a 2.73 GAA and .914 save percentage.

His rapid development has been remarkable, and he credits his preparation and mindset for his success. "I think the confidence comes from my preparation from practices," Tu explained. "It's huge. It's just being confident in my game, so when the puck drops, I'm confident in myself."

Embracing the Playoff Challenge

Tu earned the start for Game 1 of the first-round best-of-seven series against the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings at Scotiabank Saddledome, a just reward for his stellar regular season performance. While acknowledging that playoff hockey presents unique challenges, Tu doesn't appear intimidated by the heightened pressure.

"You know... playoff hockey is very different," Tu confirmed. "But I learned a lot from Anders the past year. But also, it was spending time with Daniel Hauser last year, who's had lots of playoff experiences. So that's been really beneficial, too, right?"

Hitmen coach and management have expressed full confidence in their young goaltender, backing up Tu's self-assurance with their decision to make him the playoff starter. The team's gamble on Tu has clearly paid off, transforming what might have been seen as a risky move into a strategic success.

As the Hitmen begin their playoff journey, all eyes will be on Eric Tu to see if he can maintain his regular season form under postseason pressure. His combination of athleticism, preparation, and growing experience makes him one of the most intriguing stories heading into the WHL playoffs.
