The Calgary Flames could be without forward John Beecher for their next game as the NHL's Department of Player Safety reviews an on-ice incident from Saturday's contest. Beecher is scheduled for a hearing Sunday, a strong indicator that supplemental discipline in the form of a fine or suspension is being considered.
The Incident That Sparked the Review
The disciplinary action stems from an altercation during the first period of the Flames' January 3rd home game against the Nashville Predators at the Saddledome. Following an initial fight, Predators forward Michael McCarron sought to engage Beecher in a scrum. As linesmen moved in to separate the players, Beecher reached over an official and landed a punch to McCarron's jaw.
For this action, the 24-year-old Flames fourth-line centre was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct. McCarron received identical penalties for his role in the confrontation.
Game Aftermath and Injury
The drama did not end with the first-period penalties. Seeking retribution in the second period, the Predators targeted Beecher. This led to a fight between Beecher and Nashville defenceman Nic Hague. The bout had significant consequences for Calgary, as Beecher was injured during the scrap and was unable to return to the game.
Compounding the loss, Hague scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation, securing a 4-3 victory for the visiting Predators.
Not the Only Hearing on the Docket
Beecher is not alone in facing the league's disciplinarians. Winnipeg Jets defenceman Logan Stanley also has a meeting scheduled for Sunday. Stanley must answer for a sucker punch delivered to Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk during their Saturday matchup.
The NHL's Department of Player Safety will review both incidents, with announcements regarding fines or suspensions expected in the coming days. The Flames will await the verdict on Beecher, whose physical play has now put his immediate availability in question.
