Calgary's Dylan Marineau Follows Father's Olympic Path in Freeski Halfpipe
For Calgary freeskier Dylan Marineau, reaching the Winter Olympics represents the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, one that traces back to his father's own athletic journey. The 27-year-old athlete is set to make his Olympic debut in the freeski halfpipe event at the Milano Cortina Games, carrying forward a family legacy while carving his own unique path on the international stage.
A Family Legacy of Olympic Excellence
Dylan Marineau's father competed in two Olympic Games as a bobsledder during the 1990s, creating a powerful inspiration that has driven his son's athletic ambitions since childhood. "It's been a dream of mine since I was a kid just growing up with having my dad having gone to two Olympic Games as an athlete," Marineau revealed. The Calgary native graduated from WinSport's National Sport School and has dedicated years to perfecting his craft in the halfpipe.
What makes this Olympic experience particularly special is that Marineau's father is also in Italy, serving as a bobsled coach for the United States team. "To not necessarily follow in his footsteps and kind of pave my own way to the Olympics but to get to do the same things that he's done in the past, it's both an honour and a dream come true," Marineau expressed with evident pride.
Preparing for Olympic Glory
Marineau hopes to introduce a new move for the judges during his halfpipe performance, aiming to create what he metaphorically describes as his own "classic tune" in Italy. While his father traveled to the Olympics via bobsleigh, Marineau's journey has taken him to the snow-covered mountains of Livigno, Italy, where he will compete at the Livigno Snow Park.
The Calgary athlete has benefited from the experience of teammates who competed in previous Games, particularly the 2022 Beijing Olympics. "Our teammates have passed on so much information from previous Games," Marineau noted. "They're very helpful, and they let us understand the process for getting to the Games, what the atmosphere is going to be like and all that stuff."
Calgary's Halfpipe Contingent
Marineau represents one of several Calgary athletes competing in freeski halfpipe events at the Games. The Calgary contingent includes:
- Amy Fraser, 30 (two-time Olympian)
- Andrew Longino, 23 (first-time Olympian)
- Brendan Mackay, 28 (two-time Olympian)
- Dylan Marineau, 27 (first-time Olympian)
Both Fraser and Mackay competed at the 2022 Beijing Games, finishing eighth and ninth respectively, providing valuable experience to share with first-time Olympians like Marineau and Longino.
Beyond Calgary: A Connection to Fernie
While Marineau proudly represents Calgary, he also maintains strong ties to Fernie, British Columbia, which he describes as "one of my favourite places in the world." The Marineau family would drive to Fernie every weekend during his childhood, where Dylan and his brother learned to ski. "Great powder, great community, and it's obviously beautiful," he said of the mountain town.
Today, Marineau spends significant time in Fernie as a retreat from the competitive skiing circuit. "I try to spend as much time in Fernie as I can — just away from things like decompressing from the contest scene, decompressing from training camps and everything like that," he explained. During summer months, he works building mountain-bike trails at the Fernie Alpine Resort, maintaining his connection to mountain sports year-round.
As Marineau prepares for his Olympic moment, he carries with him not only his father's legacy but also the support of multiple communities that have shaped his journey from the Calgary community of Haysboro to the international stage of the Winter Olympics.
