CFL Legend Jim Furlong Dies at Age 85

The Calgary Stampeders community and Canadian football fans are mourning the loss of a true franchise icon. Jim Furlong, a stalwart for the Red and White and a 1971 Grey Cup champion, has passed away at the age of 85.

A Versatile Career in Red and White

Furlong's remarkable tenure with the Stampeders spanned from 1962 to 1974, during which he played an incredible 174 games for the team. Demonstrating exceptional versatility, he contributed on the field as a linebacker, punter, defensive lineman, and even as a receiver over his 12-year Canadian Football League career.

Born in Winnipeg and raised in Lethbridge, Furlong joined the Stamps after playing college football at the University of Tulsa. His dedication and skill were recognized in 1965 when he was named a CFL West Division all-star linebacker. His career pinnacle came in 1971 when he helped lead the Calgary Stampeders to a Grey Cup championship victory.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Jim Furlong's name is etched throughout the Stampeders' record books. He remains one of the franchise's all-time punting leaders, with 707 career kicks for a total of 28,898 yards. On defense, he recorded 15 career interceptions. His longevity is also celebrated, as he ranks in the top 10 for the number of seasons played with the Stampeders.

"Jim was a stalwart of the Stampeders in the 1960s and 1970s and the Stampeders will forever be grateful for his contributions to the organization," said Stampeders president Jay McNeil. "We offer our deepest condolences to Jim's family and friends."

Life After Football and Family Ties

Furlong announced his retirement in June 1974 and moved to Vernon, B.C., where he began a new chapter as a high school teacher. His passion for football continued as he coached at the minor-football level, sharing his knowledge with the next generation.

The Furlong football legacy extended to his sons. Both Sean and Craig played for the University of Calgary Dinos. Sean Furlong led all of Canadian university football in receptions in 1989 and was subsequently drafted by his father's former team, the Calgary Stampeders, in 1990.

The passing of Jim Furlong marks the loss of a key figure from a golden era of Calgary Stampeders football. He will be remembered not only for his on-field versatility and championship success but also for his dedication to the sport and community long after his final game.
