Cole Caufield's Historic 40-Goal Season Lights Up Montreal
Montreal Canadiens winger Cole Caufield has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the first player on the team to score 40 goals in a season since Vincent Damphousse accomplished the feat in the 1993-94 campaign. Caufield reached this historic mark with an overtime goal that secured a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins at the Bell Centre on Tuesday night.
Embracing Every Day Like a Weekend
Known affectionately as Mr. Saturday Night for scoring 16 goals in 18 games on that day this season, Caufield shared his philosophy on life in the NHL. "Every day in my life I get to do something I love," he said after the game. "It always feels like a weekend. You grow up and you just get through school to get to the weekend and that's your favourite time of the week. So I guess now I'm just living it every day, and every day kind of feels like that."
This positive outlook isn't just personal—it radiates throughout the team. Defenceman Kaiden Guhle noted, "He's always smiling, always happy, bringing energy. He brings a lot of energy to this group that we need. It's really hard to catch the guy in a bad mood."
Flourishing Under the Montreal Spotlight
Caufield has not only adapted to the intense pressure of playing in Montreal but has thrived in it. Veteran defenceman Mike Matheson observed, "He's a very beloved player in the city—and deservedly so—and he feeds off the energy." Caufield himself acknowledged the unique atmosphere, saying, "The pressure comes with playing in the best city in the world to play hockey. So you can't complain about that every night getting to play here."
His performance this season has been exceptional. After Tuesday's game, Caufield ranked second in the NHL in goals, trailing only Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche. He is on pace to potentially reach 50 goals, a milestone no Canadiens player has achieved since Stéphane Richer scored 51 in the 1989-90 season.
A Dream Career with Humble Roots
Currently in the third season of an eight-year, $62.8 million contract, Caufield is living his childhood dream. When asked what he might be doing if hockey hadn't worked out, he chuckled and mentioned landscaping, inspired by a satisfying lawn mower commercial. "I love what I do for a living," he emphasized, and his joy is evident every time he steps on the ice.
Selected in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft, Caufield previously studied general education at the University of Wisconsin. His journey from college to NHL stardom exemplifies dedication and passion, qualities that continue to inspire his teammates and fans alike.
As the Canadiens push forward, Caufield's infectious positivity and scoring prowess are central to the team's energy and aspirations. His ability to embrace the spotlight while maintaining gratitude for his career makes him not just a key player, but a beloved figure in Montreal's storied hockey legacy.
