Canucks need drafting fix: Madden's Ducks success shows way

The Vancouver Canucks are at a critical juncture in their hockey operations reconstruction. The question is whether they will undergo a complete overhaul or merely make cosmetic changes to appear fresh.

Drafting Woes

The Canucks have the worst drafting record in the NHL salary-cap era. This deficiency has handcuffed the franchise for decades. With the 2026 NHL draft approaching, the team holds four picks in the first two rounds and 10 overall, making success imperative.

"This is a pivot point," said NHL prospects scout Shane Malloy. "If they fail this draft, the rebuild will extend two more years. Instead of five years, it will be seven or eight."

Martin Madden's Impact

Among candidates for general manager and president positions, the Canucks have interviewed Martin Madden, assistant general manager and director of amateur scouting for the Anaheim Ducks. Madden has been instrumental in Anaheim's rebuild, helping the team return to the Stanley Cup playoffs after seven years and setting them up for future success.

Since 2006, the Ducks have had 103 draft picks, with 34 becoming NHL players (at least 200 games), ranking fourth in the league. From 2009 to 2020, 28 players and three goalies made the grade, ranking third.

"All of it," Malloy said when asked how much credit Madden deserves. "He's the main reason for the result of the rebuild. You can't be successful without exceptional drafting."

Madden's background includes a civil engineering degree and an MBA in finance, giving him a unique analytical edge.

Four Pillars of Rebuild

The Ducks have successfully followed four key pillars: hitting with first-round picks, making prudent second- and third-round selections, trading veterans for futures, and adding support pieces that meet age and salary criteria. Anaheim now has seven players aged 20-24 and nine veterans in their 30s.

However, the Canucks' pursuit of a scouting guru may be complicated. Boston Bruins AGM Evan Gold and Canucks AGM Ryan Johnson are reportedly front-runners for top hockey operations roles. Madden, like his peers, believes he is ready to be a GM.

"Madden is a GM," Malloy stated. "He's one of the top-five decision makers in the NHL. Make him the GM."

Historical Deficiencies

The Canucks' drafting record is stark. From 2006-2015, they had a 17.7% success rate (11 NHL players from 62 picks), well below the NHL average of 28.2%. From 2016-2020, they managed only 11.8% success (four NHL players from 34 picks), compared to the league average of 28.2%.

The Los Angeles Kings, by contrast, achieved 37.2% and 27.8% success rates in those periods.

As the Canucks consider their options, the priority must be improving drafting and development. Whether they hire Madden as GM or in another capacity, the decision will shape the franchise's future for years to come.
