Calgary Native Tyson Gross Fulfills Dream by Signing with Flames
For Tyson Gross, a Calgary-born hockey player, signing with the Calgary Flames represents the realization of a lifelong ambition. The St. Cloud State forward inked a two-year, entry-level deal with the Flames on Thursday morning, describing the opportunity as "a lifelong dream."
From Childhood Fandom to Professional Opportunity
Gross grew up immersed in Calgary's minor hockey system, idolizing Flames legends such as Jarome Iginla, Johnny Gaudreau, and Sean Monahan throughout his youth. Wearing a Flames jersey has always been his ultimate hockey aspiration. However, when his NCAA career concluded this week, multiple NHL teams expressed interest in signing him, meaning childhood affection alone couldn't dictate his decision.
"I think the big thing was just going through and seeing opportunity there," Gross explained. "That was the No. 1 thing me and my family thought would be most important when choosing a team. It was finding the best opportunity. Obviously, growing up in Calgary and living there in the summers and having full access to all the resources they bring, all that combined and led to the decision."
A Highly Sought-After College Free Agent
Gross was widely regarded as one of the top college free agents available this year, with the Flames making him their primary target. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 194 pounds, the centre had an impressive season at St. Cloud State, earning nominations for several prestigious awards:
- NCHC Player of the Year
- NCHC Forward of the Year
- NCHC Defensive Forward of the Year
His defensive recognition is particularly notable given he ranked fifth in NCHC scoring with 18 goals and 23 assists. Flames General Manager Craig Conroy emphasized the team's focused approach, stating they target only one NCAA free agent each year, a strategy learned from former executive Brian Burke.
Joining the Flames Organization
With his St. Cloud State season now over, Gross will return to Calgary on Friday and spend time with the Calgary Wranglers in the AHL over the weekend. This signing continues a trend for the Flames, who have successfully tapped into the college free-agent market for three consecutive seasons, previously bringing in Sam Morton in 2024 and Carter King last spring.
Despite the Flames drafting several promising centres in 2025 and acquiring Jonathan Castagna and Max Curran in recent deals, Gross's resume and skill set position him well to seize opportunities within the organization. His combination of offensive production and defensive prowess makes him a valuable addition as the Flames continue their rebuild and development efforts.
